*Official* West Indies in Sri Lanka 2010

It's easy to see why though. Sehwag and Gayle are aggressive openers, whereas the others are more 'careful' middle-order batsman.
Lara wasn't as ridiculously aggressive as Sehwag and Gayle, and he went on with it.

Those guys, as they bat so aggressively, should go out before 300 moreso than Ponting, Sachin etc. Time doesn't stop them scoring triple tons, they just go out.

See, in this day and age they can have days where they just look impregnable, it's how they roll.

Ponting plays (or played, and now he can't really go on with starts) for a side where everyone scores runs, and typically he'd probably declare before he got to the triple-ton mark. As for Sachin, he's a #4, so India probably have scored some runs or else he just sinks with them.

Lara, I'm not sure about. Maybe he's just a freak.

Gayle has really been the difference here, if you exclude his runs:

Randiv is looking at 2 for 38
Mendis 4 for 90

And the West Indies would be 233/6

Up until 15 ago that'd be a lot different though. Barath, Junior Bravo and Nash have all chipped in with valuable runs.

To add to what Jono said, someone like Taylor and Jayawardene too scored triple tons, so that shows being aggressive isn't everything but having the right application is more important.
I think its pretty safe to say that no matter how good some of the modern day greats are, they don't apply themselves that well and there have been numerous occasions when people like Ponting, Sachin, Hayden, Kallis have just thrown their wicket away after crossing the hundred mark.

That collapse should give some indication of why WI adopted such a cautious approach this morning. Gayle mentioned their last tour of SL yesterday and I imagine this match would have been on his mind. Collapsed on the second day after dominating day one and ended up being thrashed.

Valid point.

Seems like Gayle's a lot like Lara in this case - he's brilliant sometimes, but they're very inconsistent. Ditto Sehwag.

Well well, Mendis has his sixth and he hasn't needed a fielder for any of them.
He is the new Anil Kumble, as long as you play him as a medium pacer you would be fine, but if you start playing for turn then lbw or bowled comes into play in a big way.

Nah Sehwag is consistent, which makes it that much more baffling. He crosses 150 a ridiculous amount of times.

Russell's footwork is pretty peculiar and while at a respectable pace isn't overly fast.

And jeez Sanga looks in wonderful touch, wouldn't be surprised to see him score a double.

This pitch will suit the bowling over the next three days, if what we saw at Galle in the test between SL and India is anything to go by....
