Franklin would mean we could keep going with our 2 man seam attack meaning Jeets may get another.

But Franklin having to bat 3 would be ITSTL. Would we move Williamson to 3 on his 2nd Test? No point in batting Franklin or Hopkins at 9 so one of Taylor, Ryder, Williamson has to bat 3.
Or Franklin could just bat three! :p

I seriously think he'd be a better selection than Watling there, although I think Watling is a lot ****ter than most people so it probably won't happen. It'd improve the team without making wholesale changes to the middle order. It's a bit out of the box, but it's not like it'd be messing with the career of a promising young batsman - he's tried and failed as a specialist batsman and recalled based on the balance his allround skills would give to the team, so he can bat where he's told IMO. :p

So Franklin comes back into the side. The batting did so well that unless there's a significant reshuffle in the order (which I can't imagine even these selectors would be desperate enough to attempt), he's going to have to come in as a replacement for one of the bowlers. India would be tough even for a pre-injury Franklin. These days, he could only really bowl from overs 1-15 and overs 65-80. The rest of the time, the lack of swing/reverse swing would see him get killed. Still might be a better bet than Patel though, and if our goal is to get two draws, then adding another batsman to the lineup wouldn't be a bad idea, though Franklin never was a good player of spin.

McCullum, McIntosh, Hummer Watling, Taylor, Ryder, Williamson, Vettori, Franklin, ****kins, Arnel, Martin
I like that 11. I definitely think Franklin should play in place of Patel.

Here are the stats from the first test for NZ's 3 main (fit) bowlers:
Martin
51 overs, 138 runs, 6 wickets, Avg 23, Econ rate 2.7

Vettori
93 overs, 199 runs, 6 wickets, Avg 33, Econ rate 2.1

Patel
52 overs, 207 runs, 3 wickets, Avg 69, Econ rate 3.9

Reckon they may keep Patel. He definitely bowled better after that terrible first day and was a little unlucky not to get a wicket or two in that second innnings. Also seems to be a chance that the next match will be on a raging turner.

Vettori was saying in the post match stuff that the injuries to Ryder and Bennett meant that Patel couldn't play as an attacking bowler. Felt that was a pretty interesting comment.

I do agree that India didn't use the review system as well as the Sri lankans in that 08 series but to say they completely sucked at it is wrong. There were quite a few decisions that should have been given upon review but weren't and that is what I feel frustrated the Indians. A certain Sachin Tendulkar not too happy with the very first one either......

Very interesting work Contra. Didn't know there were so many controversial calls that went against India even after referral.

Jeetan Patel couldn't play as an attacking bowler because he isn't one. It's a little hard to attack when you're dropping it short constantly and rattling along at six runs an over.

As I said, interesting words from Dan.

This is why India is the number one test side. Brilliant stuff from Harbhajan. Laxman IMO is the most under-rated player of the world.

The test match was near perfect. Had all the ingredients to make up for a ripper. Tests > T20s. :D

DWTA we're ranked 8th and we really looked like the only team that could win this on the last day. How does that show you're the best in the world? Best at avoiding defeat maybe.

I've supported and defended Franklin for years, but I don't think he's a good pick to play in the subcontinent as his bowling will just be fodder.

And I think it would be fairly desperate to bat him at 3 and replace Watling or McIntosh.

I suspect the team for the next test, like it or not, will be exactly the same but replacing Bennett with Southee or Arnel. Not sure which of those two they'd go with, though I get the feeling Vettori has been fairly unimpressed with Southee in recent times. Vettori loves Patel too much to drop him IMO.
