So Franklin comes back into the side. The batting did so well that unless there's a significant reshuffle in the order (which I can't imagine even these selectors would be desperate enough to attempt), he's going to have to come in as a replacement for one of the bowlers. India would be tough even for a pre-injury Franklin. These days, he could only really bowl from overs 1-15 and overs 65-80. The rest of the time, the lack of swing/reverse swing would see him get killed. Still might be a better bet than Patel though, and if our goal is to get two draws, then adding another batsman to the lineup wouldn't be a bad idea, though Franklin never was a good player of spin.

He should have been in the squad in the first place, imo.

I reckon he's been brought in just in case New Zealand win or draw the second test. They'll look to play with a massively long batting line up for the third test.

Instead of UDRS why dont they just have a system where the third umpire pretty much reviews every wicket decision and can reverse the umpire's decision within a reasonable time frame?

IMO the umpires should just be there for the instant out or not out decision and everything should be automatically reviewed.

Probably. Franklin, if he plays, would have to come in as a replacement for Patel rather than Bennett. He's just not good enough a bowler any more to justify a spot as one of two specialist seamers. However, if Franklin did play you'd probably want a toiler as your third seamer, as Franklin will have to take the new ball if he is to have any contribution. Still think a seam attack of Martin, Southee and Arnel/McKay is the best way to go.

I do agree that India didn't use the review system as well as the Sri lankans in that 08 series but to say they completely sucked at it is wrong. There were quite a few decisions that should have been given upon review but weren't and that is what I feel frustrated the Indians. A certain Sachin Tendulkar not too happy with the very first one either......

The doubt that might rise is that whether it hit the bat at the same time but the side-view replay show that it hit the pad first. And it looks out. Decision still pending. It hit the inner half of the front pad. Hold on .. the verdict is NOT OUT. Kumble has a word with the umpire and walks away disappointed. Tendulkar, sitting in the dressing room, signals it was out - he put up the index finger up. And also suggests it was skidding on rather than bouncing. Controversy here. Anyway that's that. Let's carry on. Perhaps, the umpire reckoned it would have bounced over. The virtual eye says it would have hit the top half of the middle stump

5.5 Harbhajan Singh to Warnapura, no run, Kumble has asked for review for the lbw decision. It landed on a length on the leg stump, turned slightly, Warnapura stretched forward to defend and the ball clipped the outer half of the front pad in front of middle. It might miss the off stump. Decision pending. Verdict is Not Out. The virtual eye suggests it would have hit the top of the off stump

30.2 Sehwag to DPMD Jayawardene, no run, Indians have gone for the Review for the lbw decision. It landed outside off stump, turned in to beat the waft across the line and struck him low, just below the knee roll in the front of middle stump. Looks like it might hit the leg stump. Decision pending. Verdict is Not Out. Virtual eye shows it would hit the leg stump

6.4 Muralitharan to Sehwag, OUT, Mahela asks for the Review for the lbw. The ball pitched on the leg stump line - - half outside leg and half inside- and straightened and Sehwag shouldered arms. The ball clipped the inner half of the front pad - which was placed around the leg stump line - and then went on to hit the back pad in front of the stumps. It's a slightly tough one. It hit the front pad first and then deflected. After the chat with the third umpire, Benson has given it out. Joy for Sri Lanka. What a blow from Murali.

Let's rewind: I will have a look at the replays - they have gone for ad breaks - to see whether it was the topspinner or doosra - in which case he would be out - or was it the off break in which case considering it hit the front pad first, you can say it would have turned to miss the leg stump. Boycott, on air, reckons it should not have been given out.

Replays are in now. The ball did straighten. It was not the pure topspinner that would have gone on with the angle. It did straighten a bit. The virtual eye showed the path as if it hit the back pad first. The virtual eye showed it hitting the middle as if the deflection didn't happen. What happened was that it hit the front pad first. Having said that it was not hitting the middle, I would have to say that it might have grazed the leg stump. Any way that is that. A you tube moment. And the debate will continue.

27.3 Kumble to Warnapura, no run, review for the leg before decision. Kumble has asked for it. It landed on a length just outside off stump, turned in to beat the forward prod and struck him on the knee roll in front of middle. Decision pending. NOT OUT is the verdict. The umpires must have reckoned it would turned down leg side. My guess is that it would have hit the leg stump. Kumble has a chat with the umpire Doctrove. Virtual eye suggests it would have hit the top of the leg stump

Big positives for NZ to take out of this game, and they deserve plenty of credit for really pushing India onto the back foot.

The batting was impressive, they were disciplined and patient in registering a more than competitive total. Williamson was outstanding, his understanding of what was required on that pitch was instant, now I don't know if we can expect a more free flowing innings on a pitch with more pace in it, or if he is by nature a watchful player with a very good temperament, as I haven't seen too much of him. He certainly got it right here anyway. I'm looking forward to seeing more of him.

It was Martin's effort that got NZ into a position of potentially winning the game against the odds, great wholehearted effort from him.

First make one outlandish remark after another and when presented with some facts, ignore the parts where almost every one of your points were proved to be rubbish, you come up with another rubbish response without any proof.

Faults of the system were pretty widely reported during/after the India-SL series.

Can't Win Anything Lately Not Even a Toss

In New Zealand's last 10 matches in all forms of the game they have won the toss 5 times and lost it five times. In their last 6 matches they have lost the toss 5 times.

Still that isn't so bad now is it?

In Test matches we haven't won a toss since 2009, and have lost the toss 5 times in a row. In the last 10 matches we have only won the toss twice (against Pakistan and the last match against India in NZ).

It's not under your control to decide the fine line between a decision that was surely not out and one that could go either way. The batsman doesn't get to watch himself from the other end. He's probably in an even worse position to make that marginal call than the umpire giving the decision! You just have to watch the reactions of batsmen out LBW to know how much faith to repose in their own judgement. Like Sanz said, its just shifting the blame from the umpire to the batsman. Just have a universal review system in place and be done with it instead of playing mindgames with the players.

Yeah, I actually agree with this. I think the referral system is an absolutely terrible way to make use of technology. It's the second worst option, just ahead of not using technology at all (ie. what we do now).

Franklin would mean we could keep going with our 2 man seam attack meaning Jeets may get another.

But Franklin having to bat 3 would be ITSTL. Would we move Williamson to 3 on his 2nd Test? No point in batting Franklin or Hopkins at 9 so one of Taylor, Ryder, Williamson has to bat 3.
