*Official* Sri Lanka in Australia 2010

The Australian pacemen bowled terrible, but I think this is more Sri Lanka's win than Australia's loss.
I think thats a great, and concise, way to sum the match up.

I think both this match and Mohali were combinations of bad bowling and tremendous performances from the opposition.

Thought that the worst move was pulling off Doherty during the powerplay. Three out in the powerplay, put two out straight and one out at deep forward square, and ask Malinga to hit across the line. Once Doherty (or a spinner) was back on, guys had their eye in and were raring to go. The guy was hot, had taken four in his first game, let him keep going.

What an awesome performance from Sri Lanka.

Looked like the game was being played in Sri Lanka judging by the crowd.

**** me dead. It was good to see Xavier perform with the ball though!
Unfortunately not many people will be thinking of that anymore though. On a slightly more positive note, hopefully nobody will recall Hussey made runs either

Did Doherty really bowl that well?

The only ones I got to see were two Lankan batsmen missing straight ones and a horrible shot from Silva. Still, impressive debut figures though, and his low economy suggests he must have been pretty good too.

It was crazier in 96 when Dharamasena hit SL to victory at the G, that was mental! Huge crowd that night.

Agree 100%. Smith could have (and probably would have) been smashed even more severly if he was used. Then people would be saying, why wasn't Johnson used more?

The people at fault are the same people in Mohali. The bowlers. Johnson especially has now failed twice and contributed signifcantly to the loss of 2 matches. His inconsistancy suddenly becomes very noticable when pressure is on to win the match.

Plus, as you said, the batting to begin with was frankly ****. Even Hussey who kept the innings together should have been able to score more and put us in a more comfortable position. We also missed Ponting a lot...

Clarke as a captain has little to do with this loss imo.
Just don't get this argument based on what, 2/3 matches? It's the nature of how he bowls, nothing more, nothing less. How about the match he won for Australia in 08/09 with just 10 runs to spare against SA? How about the fact that he's had a significant amount of pressure on him as a very experience leader of a bowling attack when he blew SA out of the park in SA? Or does that not count? Gets no credit for the way in which he comeback under what was some pretty intense pressure after the tosh he served up in the first 2 ashes tests?

In terms of ODI's, he's been rather average bar a handful of games for the past 12 months or more, it's hardly anything different from the norm.

I may be slightly biased in my view towards Johnners, but it's quite frustrating to see how suddenly we don't win a match or 2 in which he's bowled poorly, and it's because he can't handle pressure.

I'm getting sick of the media excited by Hussey making runs in One Day Cricket... He always does, I can't believe how runs in ODI is seen as more important than first class runs for Test Cricket..

Yes Doherty bowled really well, he had 3/4 from 3 overs FFS.. I'm sure he's a bit disappointed with his final 3 overs, but it was a very encouraging debut for him.

AWTA so, so much. Unfortunately it's pretty unlikely the selectors are going to realise he's mediocre in ODIs so he'll be bowling dross in the World Cup too while one of Harris, Bollinger or Tait serves drinks. CricketWeb members will question his Test place based on it as well.

To be fair Malinga had already taken a shine to Doherty in his PP over. I think the intention was to keep him on until he got smashed down the ground.

In the end, you can't plan for bad bowling. And once the PP started - from the very first ball (which was a wide) that's all Clarke was given. I think he could've brought the field up a little earlier but it's tough to justify that with the quantity of rank long hops being served up.

The funniest part is who his likely replacement will be if they drop him - someone who's had one decent First Class season after six poor to medicore ones and then spent a year out injured, but has done okay in a few ODIs.

Agree with this to an extent, but I definitely dont think ODIs are Johnson's best format. Same with Siddle. Would rather see Tait and McKay in for those two. I think Tait is injured - don't know why McKay isn't getting a game.

Also - James Hopes would have been very very handy in this match.

What frustrated me tonight was the pace bowlers complete incapability to bowl an over of consistent deliveries on the stumps. The typical over had the following pattern:

Ball 1. Slower delivery
Ball 2. Wide outside off
Ball 3. Short Ball
Ball 4. Short slower delivery
Ball 5. Slower delivery
Ball 6. Wide
Ball 7. Short Ball

In the past the one guy who did so well at knocking over the tail was Brett Lee. He always bowled straight and fast. He was replaced well by Ryan Harris who doesn't try anything too fancy. The bowlers selected tonight were simply incapable of bowling to a simple plan, and I'm afraid the best backup bowler in McKay is of the similar mould in that he will try 6 different deliveries an over. Mitch Starc I don't even want to mention, his accuracy is worse than Johnson.

Harris is going to prove crucial to our World Cup defence I feel. We will not win without an effective close out bowler. Not many other names could fill that void either, Nannes is not that style, Harwood is too old, Stuart Clarke is too slow, Geeves is always injured, the only roughie I can throw into the ring is Nathan Rimmington. I hope it doesn't come to that though.
