Hoping that Southee gets the new ball and doesn't get replaced by Bennett or McKay. Southee needs to play as much as possible to build his experience. He is gradually getting more and more Savvy. I remember one inning against Hussey where he bowled nicely cross seam against the left hander before trying to swing one in - and Hussey was all over it and clipped it away for two. Southee doesn't make mistakes like that any more. Reckon he is our future. If we are lucky he could end up taking 150 wickets maybe 200 if he sticks around.

Are Foxsports covering this series?

India will almost deafinitely win this series, I wouldn't rule out a few drawn test matches though. New Zealand are known to stand up and perform when they are against India or when things are going really bad for them in recent times. Is Southee a genuine exciting prospect for NZ? I haven't seen much of his bowling but he looks like a bit of a pie serving seam up bowler at times, having said that, his outswinger is one of the better ones going around at the moment.

He's not good enough for the Australian team. He wouldn't crack Pakistan either ahead of Umar Gul.
Good enough for NZ though.

Just good to watch someone improve.

Genuine prospect, but still learning how to bowl when it's not swinging or seaming.

Only 21 or so so plenty of time left.

He's bowled some great spells for New Zealand while at other times he can be completely wayward and not helpful at all. His best domestic figures which he achieved last season were pretty amazing too - 8/27 or something iirc.

What I like about Southee is that after he bowls a good ball - he just tries to bowl another one. He doesn't try to bowl the perfect delivery that starts on leg and hits off - he just tries to be consistently good.

Yeah, we need to be patient with Southee. I think he has a bit of x-factor. You never really know what you'll get at the moment, but on his day he can be deadly. It's just making him more consistent and confident. Same story with the bat really.

It probably says more about the dire fast bowling stocks in New Zealand then Tim Southee's actual ability right now but at 21 Southee is probably New Zealand's best test bowler - so yeah he's a rather exciting prospect for New Zealand.

Unless he's serving up some absolute rubbish for a good period of time New Zealand have to stick with him for Test cricket - much like England did with Stuart Broad. It'll take some time but he'll get there, he has too much going for him not to become world class imo.

Given that he's 21, and therefore could play upwards of 100 matches if he stays fit (and with his relatively easy action and lack of serious injuries that seems somewhat likely), I would hope that he takes at least 300 wickets. Anything less would be a sign of a substandard bowler.

As an outsider its hard to judge Southee. Yes he is young & looks like a bowler who could be fairly useful in seaming conditions very often. But i guess you could have said the same thing about a then young James Franklin when he had this performance:

3rd Test: New Zealand v Australia at Auckland, Mar 26-29, 2005 | Cricket Scorecard | Cricinfo.com

Franklin has fell of spectacularly as bowler as we all know. So it will be interesting to see how Southee continues to progress down the years.

Jimmy Franklin got injured and worked on his batting, and has never been the same bowler. If he can be as effective as Franklin's first incarnation I'll be happy.

Sky doesn't look as though they'll be showing this series at all :@ The new Skywatch turned up today and there isn't a mention of this series in the sports preview section (the ashes, Sri Lanka's tour of Australia is all there) It isn't in the scheduling either.

Haha, Jesus.

Should send over Sinclair. He'll be all good since he's not on TV. We'll win too, because we're not on TV.

10 Indian players pick themselves if fully fit. Who they pick between Ishant and Sreesanth will be an interesting one. Although I can't say getting picked for the Ahemdabad test would be a good thing. The pitch is a road.

That better not be true, my exams finish on the second and I was hoping to spend a decent amount of the start of my holidays watching the cricket...

Patel is in the team as a specialist 12th man. Have you seen him deliver spare batting gloves and drinks to the batsmen between overs? He's world class, none better. Playing him out of position would be a disaster, imo.

I think that New Zealands main issue in playing on sub-continental wickets is the amount of purchase off the pitch that the quality spin bowlers from the sub-continent. I think that more coaching needs to be put in place for our batsmen around the area of responsibly playing spin.
