Cahill!! WAG

Only way pool are going to score a goal here is through a bit of Torres genius, which is going to be nigh upon impossible given the service (or lack there of) he's receiving...:(

One suspects Roy will be quietly moved towards the door marked "exit" ASAP. Nice bloke, but looks out of his depth.

Down side is Bent 'Arry looks shoo in for next England manager now.

Are people still gonna peddle out the trite that it's Rafa's fault or just accept that Hodgson is out of his element? His pre-game interview almost pleading to the owners and showing off his LMA award was cringeworthy.

Whether it's Rafa's fault or not, I refuse to believe he would have been any better than Hodgson this season.

Haha, it takes something major to be that deluded. We are second last, with the worst start in over 50 years. Even Souness did better.

Twice La Liga winner (will probably add Serie A), EPL runner up, CL winner (and runner up) and UEFA cup winner vs Europa finalist. Rafa > Hodgson. That is not even up for debate.

TBF I don't think Rafa much rated Aquillani either. He wouldn't be the first player to fail to settle in the English game and look better elsewhere.

He did, that's why he bought him for 17 million pounds. Unfortunately, he was injured for a good portion of the season. Towards the end he was a regular starter - which is why people were so pissed off with Hodgson loaning him out. As soon as he got fit he got shipped off and we missed the best of him. It's especially inane since he was such a creative hub whenever he was on and that is one thing we severely lack now.

The only thing I remember Rafa saying against Aquilani is that he believes a lot of his injury woes have been in his head. Don't think it was ever a matter of quality.

This might be out of order, but I've gotten a feeling over several years that the English media is xenophobic. I hate making those kinds of claims but the comparison to the reaction of Rafa and Hodgson at Liverpool has almost sealed that for me. Rafa would have been slaaaaaaauuuughtered for this kind of start to the league. Roy gets barely a mention.

surely not serious?
Yeah pretty much. Rafa never really suggested to me that he was anything other than a poor manager.

It's a moot point anyone, including the one that I made, because it's impossible to know, as there are about a million other factors that have influenced how well they have done.

Anyway, I'm going to savour this moment to laugh at Liverpool and how utterly crap they :)

You do know that even when they were filth last season they came 7th under Benitez, right?

They also came second under him, won a European Cup, got to another final. It's preposterous to imagine he could have got them into the relegation zone.

Shame we're heading down instead of up though, as I'd have fancied a derby next season ;)

Not convinced he was a Rafa signing at all. As I remember it he didn't start him for a good two or three months after he was fit.

It's not out of order, although I would say it's only some parts of our media
There's def a lazy kind of xenophobia, particularly amongst football writers/commentators. All the "he's not that type of player; salt of the earth, gives his mother flowers" talk when someone like Shawcross boots someone gets on my ****.

That said there's been a fair bit of anti Roy stuff, it's just been overshadowed by the Hicks/Gillett saga.

He definitely was. This is the post-Parry era where Benitez finally got the power he wanted. You're essentially saying that Aquilani was on the bench for more than half the season because it wasn't until about 2 months in that he healed from his injury. He was played but even after being "fit" he was continuously ill or unfit. He was not on the bench and unused as you seem to be suggesting for most of the season.

Suffice to say, there'd be no way Aquilani would have been loaned out. If Benitez really wanted to get rid of him, which there is no real evidence he did, then he'd have sold him. Not loaned him out as Roy has done instead of reinvesting the money back into the club. Currently, at the end of his loan spell Juve have the option of buying Aquilani for 16m euros. That, especially, makes the decision to loan him out daft. It's not like we were City and could just loan marquee players. If we don't need the player we certainly needed the money.

It's a bit odd that Aquilani had so many injuries last year (and throughout his career) and is playing every game for Juventus.

I don't think Benitez would have had Liverpool sitting 19th in the league, but I don't believe he'd have had them anywhere near the top 7 either.

For a club of Liverpool's stature, sitting 10th after 9 games isn't any better than sitting 19th.
