It's pretty bad IMO - Look at the way he scores now, his age and the players waiting on the wings. Has to go, sooner the better.
50/50 for mine. He' still accumulating decent scores, just that conversion rate is the issue (though he scored a century a few tests ago it looks like). I'm leaning towards backing him because he's unstoppable in form and a real hardass, which this middle order needs with North shaky until he reaches 20, Ponting's decline and Clarke's wafting.

And the players who can replace him on this tour are Smith and Hughes. Hughes technique is suspect and he's inexperienced, and Smith is simply inexperienced and probably replacing North anyway.

Back home there's Cameron White, who tbf I wouldn't mind seeing in there. He's a mature and experienced cricketer which this middle order needs. Ferguson promises much but delivers less. Who else is a realistic shot? Khawaja? I don't know anything about him so won't comment.

I have no problem with Katich dropping back down to six. He's looking incredibly scratchy at the moment but still manages to stick around and accumulate so he could be perfect for some stability in the lower order

I have this sinking feeling that North will play the next test match
I wouldn't have Hughes open in place of Katich, but that's because I suspect Hughes might not be up to it with his technique. Has he worked on his game?

Katich and Watto ain't broke, so no need to fix it. Replace North with a middle order bat.

Actually to go back on my earlier post, I meant soon as in the end of the Ashes soon. Give another season for the grommets on the domestic scene to work on their game. It's just that the position of no.5 can be so crucial, as Steve Waugh proved to us many years ago, and with Hussey failing to convert most of his starts, a replacement needs to be lined up.

Yeah I was just talking about taking extreme measures to drop North in the next test.

Fair enough. Hussey will probably call it quits after the Ashes anyway. Would be as good a time as any, especially if Australia win.

International Debutant
At least with Hussey there's a chance that he may come good again for a brief period. Plus he can still play ODIs.

With North you should've dropped him after his debut test. The guy is not fit to play tests, ODIs or T20s.

You couldn't have known that before he played them, and his first dig certainly vindicated his selection.

The guy can play, he just suffers Tim McIntosh syndrome. In a team that demands excellence, it's not good enough. Australians trust your system to bring a decent replacement.

Marcus North would walk into several teams around the world at five or six, and though he'd be a popular bashing bag for talkback callers, he'd hold his place.

That's why the selectors will retain North.

And Ponting would be one of the biggest targets you'd think.
Ponting himself said he will be gone if he loses the ashes, and justifiably too in my opinion. Although, if he happens to magically return to the Ponting of old, he would still obviously be useful to keep just as a batsman. Maybe dropping the captaincy might even allow him to improve his game.

However, that won't happen...if he loses his captaincy I'm sure he would retire.

Ponting retiring would and will be bad when the time comes. It won't be catastrophic, but it will leave a hole like the Warne/McGrath one which will need some patience to fill.

Hopefully Ponting stays around as long as possible.

Yeah agree. Don't think he'll be hold onto his position if we lose the ashes. Heads will have to roll. But he's still a brilliant batsmen. Just finds ways to get himself out these days.
