*Official* Australia in India 2010

From Punter himself

Shane Watson has made such a difference. He is a world class all- rounder who can do a great job with the ball and if you have that you have an option to play another spinner, but if you don't have an all-rounder you can't.

I await apologies for many in this thread who amazingly claimed that Watson lacked the bowling grunt to provide Australia with the much-needed flexibility during this Test series.
Heh, just because Ponting says it doesn't mean it's automatically correct. Cameron White's bowling to confirm.

FWIW, I actually agree with you about Watson. If two of Australia's best four bowlers were spinners then I wouldn't hesitate making Watson the third seamer, tbh - he wouldn't be bowling that much more at all; just at different times. He'd still be the fifth bowler in the attack and spinners can bowl longer spells anyway, so he'd probably end up bowling less with two spinners if the opposition racked up a decent score than he would with just the one spinner.

However, Australia don't have two spinners amongst their best four bowlers. In fact they don't even one spinner amongst their best six bowlers and we'd probably be hitting mid 20s at the earliest before Steve Smith appeared.

Smith looked poor against spin in the series vs Pakistan in England, though of course he was on debut.

You would think if they picked him he would come in for North, surely. If Smith plays and bowls then they don't need North doing the same. And even though he has been below par for 12 months, Hussey still >>>> North.
Yeah, that's a strange one. You'd expect Hussey to do well in India, especially in a crisis irrespective of his rather long slump.

Really looking forward to the start of play tommorow. It should be a cracking contest between the two teams, backing Australia to pull off a few suprises in this series. Lucky that I have foxsports as well.

Thought Sky had the rights to all home Tests in India, Australia, South Africa and West Indies?
The 4 year deal with the Indian Broadcaster ended earlier this year and hasn't been renewed yet. All is not lost yet apparantly the last deal was done really close to the England tour of India so fingers crossed.

If the worst happens theres always streams I suppose :(

Yea I found about this after you made this post from a person who I know that works @ sky.

Getting very worried now that nothing is on the skypsorts schedule as yet though.

But also I just remembered when I watched the 1998 and 2001 (I think) AUS tour to IND. I watched one of those tours on one if the 800 channels on sky, which shows the asian networks ZeeTV or Ten Sports. But you have to pay extra for those channels though.

I predict Ojha will have a great series,i love the way he uses his whole body in the action so he gets extra bite of the wicket.

Stats and trivia

* Over the last ten years, Australia have lost more Tests to India than they have won. India are the only team that can boast of this record over Australia for the decade

* During that period, Australia are the only team to have beaten India in a series at home

* No bowler has dismissed Ricky Ponting more times in Test cricket than Harbhajan Singh, who has claimed his wicket on 10 occasions

* With the retirement of Muttiah Muralitharan, Harbhajan is now the leading wicket-taker among active Test spinners, with 357

* Michael Hussey and Simon Katich, who started their careers as opponents in Under-13s cricket in Perth, begin this series each having played 52 Tests and each having scored exactly 3981 runs

It's rather disappointing that we aren't getting this in New Zealand when in 2008 we did. That's Sky for you though, fork out money for cricket that's played between 11pm and 6am here (English Summer, IPL, CL) and not provide it when it's in a very good time slot with two very good teams going up against each other.

I was quite impressed you knew this. Until I read the match preview.

Rumours swirling around the backstreets of India that Hussey could be punted for Smith.
Obv just speculation as of now, but surely not, Brian? I'd assumed at least part of North's slightly baffling retention was his not-awful offies; if a batsman is to be punted for Smith it must make sense to ditch the non-performer when another spin option is being introduced.

Also, Katich, Clarke...

Actually, if Smith plays Oz will field a test side with all 4 main slow bowling options (offspin, legspin, SLA & Chinamen) covered, that can't have happened too often, can it? Especially bowlers who've all taken test scalps.

Happened in Australia's most recent few Tests when Smith played for Hauritz. Someone mentioned it on CricketWeb and I was actually sure it was you; guess not though. :p

I couldn't honestly swear it wasn't, tbh.

I thought after I posted it happend when McGain played, but the fact North bowls offies didn't occur to me despite mentioning it in my previous post.

Senior moment.

Logically you'd think North would be the one to go rather than Hussey, but if it did happen I think it'd have something to do with Hussey having only just joined the team from the Champions League in the last day and thus not being too well prepared.
