Greatest cricketers since 1980

That only includes the 2000's though. I feel that Ponting just needed to extend his astonishing run of form by one or two more seasons and he would be categorically above for mine but I struggle to do it as it is.

But you gotta admit leading the INdian side of the late 90s and the Windies side of the last two decades IS a LOT more than leading THAT Aussie side.. I mean, do you seriously think any of the Aussies would have out partying after being 46 all out in a home test??????
The question is though, why would players from the Australian side not be going out partying? From all accounts, Ponting is a very good leader of men and has the whole team behind him. You're not going to go out partying and piss off a captain if he's got your respect, something which Ponting does seem to have from the players in his team. Perhaps the same can't be said of others.

I don't know man. To the best of my knowledge, none of the Indians skipped a team meeting to go fishing :p

I think Ponting has also had to deal with difficult issues as captain. For example, the way he lead the team in the 2003 world cup after Warne getting thrown out just as the matches were starting was really quite excellent. So I think you can complain about his on-field tactics, but his off-field leadership of the team has been exceptional imo.

I feel comparing captaincy is a very difficult job because there is very little common ground in the situations that two different captains have to deal with. I think there are very few captains who have managed to take a great, successful team and run it down to the ground (Ponting certainly doesn't belong to that category) and very few who have inspired a relatively weak/young/inexperienced team lacking self-belief to great heights. Sachin and Lara clearly don't belong to the latter category. But they haven't been put in the first situation and Ponting hasn't yet done enough post-McWarne to put him in the latter category either IMO. I'm only talking about Test captaincy here, in ODI's it's hard to argue against Ponting being one of the all-time great captains.

Whatever it takes!!!

Isn't that what I meant by he is a good man-manager?

Thats the difference HB, my opiion is based on what Ponting did do and you opinion is based on what you think Tendulkar or Lara could have done. Not really the same is it.

11,000 odd runs @ 55 makes him arguably the best batsman since 1980, not just me but plenty of others too. I dont have a problem stomaching that.

And another thing

Your arguement is week and feeble.
Want me to quote the same men in the cricinfo round table deciding Sachin and Lara the best of the generation EASILY????? :p

Btw, try linking to that article mate.. We will see what it really is about..

Um... yes... I am agreeing with you. :)
:) My point here is not that he is not any good a captain. My point is just that he is NOT that good a captain and inspite of him probably being a good man-manager, for the most part, he has had to "manage" pretty "good men" so to speak, as cricketers and team mates, than Sachin and Lara had to.. It is hard to put it out exactly, but that is the gist of what I meant to say all along.

Australia captain Ricky Ponting has been chosen as the "ESPN Cricinfo Player of the Decade for the 2000s" by a 38-strong panel of experts, including current and former players.

Ponting beat back the challenge of other current greats of the game including senior Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar, who is placed sixth in the list. Sitting at the top, the Australian fetched highest 60 points, 23 more than the second placed Protea all-rounder Jacques Kallis (37) who was followed by Ponting's compatriot Adam Gilchrist (29).

Over the past decade, Ponting has scored more runs and centuries in both forms of the game than any other batsman and is the only player to go past the 9000-mark in both forms. The 35-year-old right-handed batsman scored 55 centuries in international cricket during the period, 13 clear of Tendulkar, and was one of only three batsmen to average more than 58 in Tests, a media release said. South Africa's Kallis and Pakistan's Mohammad Yousuf are the two others.
Ponting named best batsman of the decade
13 explayers and cricket writers selected Ponting 3 selected Tendulkar and 1 selected Lara.

Pontings claim to best batsman is overwhelming.

The Wheel is Forever
I am not really sure if many would dispute the fact that Ponting has been the most successful batsman of this decade.

That wasnt for batsman of the decade, it was for player of the decade and takes into account the value of the player to the teams success.

So those 38 jurors believe that Ponting was mare valuable than Murali for the decade, they though that Pontings leadership, fielding and batting made him the most valuable player for the decade. He won by a large margin also.

This backs up exactaly what Ikki said about Ponting being more valuable than Murali for an entire decade.

I think people were being particularly harsh on Ikki. Choosing only ten best players for the last thirty years is no mean task and I'd have to lave out many ATGs too. My list would be: (In no particular order)

Hadlee
Marshall
Khan(I)
Murali
Warne
Waqar
Donald
Tendulkar
Border
Ponting

This does not in anyway suggest that I consider the difference between Lara/Ponting as Batsmen or Mcgrath/Donald as bowlers to be significant;Infact it is negligible, It's just that the list is too constricting and exclusive.
