Looking back @ the Germany shocker. I still dont know what can be done.
1998 WC, EURO 2000, WC 2002, EURO 2004, WC 2006, EURO 08 qualifying failure & this 2010 Shocker. (Althhough i saw ENG played good football in WC 98 & 2002 & for the majority of EURO 04). Its the same problem over & over - this very good footballers just keep freezing in big tournaments. So i dont blame Capello one bit (although he did get tactics wrong vs Germany)
This was not the team that was so dominant in the 2010 world cup qualifiers. The experienced Croatia team that England smoked 4-1 in 2008 (playing the kind of quick paced, skillful football that Germany destroyed us with today) was much better than that young German side.
England always start matches in major tournaments so slow & nervy in the first 20-30 minutes, which for years always puts us on the back foot. Or we defend too deep when we get a lead.
I have never seen John Terry look so slow in my life. JESUS CHRIST,
where the hell was the defense againts Germany. Terry/Upson where opened up like a red-sea over & over. While Johnson work as a full-back defensively was poor throughout the tournament.
English football needs restructuring:
- A winter break has to be introduced to premiership. Too many tournaments in the last decade do key English players, go in looking tired, injured. But since the WC, the premier league has already began to push back on this.
- Limit of foreign players & a wage cap. What has happened with Arsenal is a disgrace really. Just one English player starting regularly in one of the main English clubs. When i started watching football in the late 90s, Arsenal had a set of English players playing regularly like Lee Dixon, Ray Parlour, Seaman, Campbell etc. That needs to corrected ASAP now.
- MOST IMPORTANTLY We need that academy in Burton up & running ASAP & start developing a consistent crop of young talent & coaches.
Since i dont want to hear anymore that the "Premiership is the best league in Europe". When the national side are playing like this.
It has been a frustrating decade being a English football fan indeed. This has been a very talented era of players - but the have blew it. Technically this era has one more chance to do something in EURO 2012 - but after a decade of frustration i'm not going to support the national team with great passion anymore. If qualify & play well - thank god.
The future as shown in the 1st post WC friendly vs Hungary isn't that great either. We dont have much quality defenders or full-backs (only in Gibbs we look like we have a good abck-up to Cole). I fear Ferdinand is fastly becoming another King. So basically we are stuck with a set of slow questionable international quality defenders in Terry, Dawson, Jaigelka, Cahill. Other youngsters like Steven Taylor, David Wheather, Shawcross, Smaling may also be considered in the next 2 years, but they remain unknowns ATM.
- No good defensivee mid-fielders. Barry is average & we dont know if Hargreaves will ever come back. Probably time to get Rodwell in the side, plus as Wenger suggested, Emmanuel Frimprong should be convinced to play for ENG.
- Midfielders especially on the flanks is probably the most satifying area. Walcott, Lennon, A Young, Wilshire, A Johnson, Milner is very good.
- Up front - Rooney lives. Zamora could be a good target-man type striker (although i think for the future ENG need to stop playing with such strikers, since the English players have the mentality that if the player up top is big, then all they can do is hoof it up to him. It's just their natural thinking). Defoe & Owen will still be around for EURO 2012 consideration. While the progress of youngster like Any Caroll & Connor Wickham will be closely watched.
The usual keeper problem. Hart's coming along well, long may it continue. But behind him its average, Robinson retiring from international duty doesn't help things.
