I generally don't support teams and mainly support players that I like. I often don't have any real reason for liking the players I do, either.
It's true in all sports people can take an instant like or dislike to a competitor for no apparent reason. For instance I took to Maria Sharapova the first time I saw her, and to this day I can't work out why.

She's hot, but her game simply hasn't progressed since 2004. Still, you can win a few Slams in the women's game by ball-bashing alone.

Ball bashing, being clutch, and having the ability to come back from behind. She has all 3.

I agree, she's tough mentally. But I expected her to have improved significantly from when she won Wimbledon in 2004. A bit of variety and finesse wouldn't be too much to ask for, would it?

She's definitely an underachiever, and has been stubborn with regards to changing her game, no doubt. Reckon she'd been a bit unlucky with injuries too though.

Hmm... not sure she's underachieved actually considering her limitations.. she's probably the female equivalent of someone like Berdych and she's got 3 Slams to her name.

Yeah but Berdych has been the one who has underachieved :p

So by saying she's like Berdych, it's saying she has achieved what she should have, and he hasn't.

Understand your point though. I do think however that being able to crack a serve and be incredibly strong mentally is just as vital as being able to drop shot or slice well.

So she's got limitations, but so does 95% of the roster when it comes to other aspects where Sharapova exceeds.

Berdych might well have 3 Grand Slams if the men's game was comparable to the women's game. There hasn't been a female equivalent of Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal in a long time now.

Only playing three sets makes it much easier to cause an upset, too.

I agree, if Serena had always been as fit/focused as Federer, she'd have smashed all the Slam records on the women's side by now, but she has only been like that since 2009.
