Talk about taking the context out of the whole post and then make up stuff that I never said or even suggested. When did I ever say that Tendulkar didn't go through a lean patch ?That conveniently glosses over a 4-5 year period where Tendulkar was, by his lofty standards, crap.
Yep mine too. Was shattered.Worst worst worst memory as a Sachin fan that.
series winning hundreds in Australia and Sri Lanka? U do understand we have not won series there in this time period don't u?Would politely disagree. He has in the last 3 years scored series winning hundreds in Australia, Sri lanka and of course three 150+ knocks, the 175 (which for me is about his best hundred) and 160 odd in NZ and of course the double hundred. He has averaged 52 (see signature) in the last 3 years which is just brilliant for someone at his age.
The only thing that tugs me back to 90s are the Sharjah hundreds. Perhaps emotions are clouding judgements here, which is not terrible thing.
I think he means the CB series and the tri nation series in Australia and Srilanka. Both were really good knocks.series winning hundreds in Australia and Sri Lanka? U do understand we have not won series there in this time period don't u?
I won't necessarily agree with that. He did play attacking innings picking and choosing his moments but those were mostly on flat tracks and/or at home.I agree. In Tests, he was both the destroyer (Chennai '98 against Australia) and the anchor (Chennai '99 against Pak ) as and when the situation demanded. But his standard deviation in Tests over the last year or two is probably even lower than it was then.
He has always been a different beast in ODIs though.Sachin of 1998 was truly a spectacle. Regardless of people going on about tests being the only thing that matters, for me whenever we talk about Sachin the Sharjah innings will always be among the first to come to mind.
I love the latest version of Sachin for the intelligence he is showing in his batting. Choosing the bowlers to hit, where to hit, when to defend, when to attack. His 175 against Australia would rank in the top 5 ODI innings of his.
I didn't watch the Perth innings and haven't been able to find any highlights either. I think you are underrating his 155* in Chennai in '98 though, it set the tone for things to come in so many ways, India's success against Australia for the rest of the year, domination over Warne etc. and it wasn't an easy wicket to score runs at that pace on.I won't necessarily agree with that. He did play attacking innings picking and choosing his moments but those were mostly on flat tracks and/or at home.
The Tendulkar I LOVED watching was the kid who smashed them around at the WACA as a 18 year old kid... We just LOST him after 1996... Today's Sachin is a LESS watered down version of that kid who would put Sehwag to shame in terms of attacking batsmanship.
And no, I am not talking about ODIs at all here. Tests are the REAL test of batsmanship for me and that is where it ends. ODIs test completely differenent facets of a batsman than tests but for me, tests are still the ultimate test of pure batsmanship.
lol.. I watched that Chennai Innings LIVE.. Trust me, I am not underrating a knock of that aggression when we were behind after the first dig. I just meant that even then, right during that knock, I knew it was more of a one off from Sachin.. A series he has just decided he is gonna be aggressive in. Always knew it was not going to last, for some reason.I didn't watch the Perth innings and haven't been able to find any highlights either. The best Sachin innings I've seen in fast bowler friendly conditions was the 169 in Cape Town against Donald et al. Beautiful, beautiful batting and as good as any innings I've seen by Ponting or Lara against quality pace bowling.
Ah yes, the Bloemfontein innings (missed that one as well ) I did rate the 169 very highly though, because everybody else looked so ridiculously incapable of coping with the pace and bounce of the wicket, even if there wasn't much lateral movement.lol.. And that knock in Cape Town WAS awesome, but don't agree at all that it was bowler friendly conditions. We were just so woeful that we were getting blown away in perfectly good batting conditions. I mean, McMillan, seriously, WTH were our batsmen doing, apart from Azhar and Sachin???
And I think his 150 odd in Bloemfontein on day 1 was a much better example of an attacking knock in bowler friendly conditions. Certainly, I rate that his second best test knock.
yeah.. that is kinda natural for RSA wickets at that time, wasn't it? For me, his 2 best knocks so far would be that 114 at Perth and the 155 or whatever at Bloemfontein..Ah yes, the Bloemfontein innings (missed that one as well ) I did rate the 169 very highly though, because everybody else looked so ridiculously incapable of coping with the pace and bounce of the wicket, even if there wasn't much lateral movement.
Really? I know the Perth knock is considered the best by Sachin himself, but I saw a program by Richie on TV in 2005 where he stated that the Perth knock was beautiful but India was losing anyway but it was the Century in Sydney(In a 'boredraw', Shane Warne's debut) which was one of the best knocks he has seen and the best knock on Australian soil.yeah.. that is kinda natural for RSA wickets at that time, wasn't it? For me, his 2 best knocks so far would be that 114 at Perth and the 155 or whatever at Bloemfontein..
BTW, about that Perth knock, seeing as many of you seem to have missed it... Richie Benaud is not a man who is impressed easily and neither is he one for OTT praise but if you can find it on youtube, juz listen to the sheer awe in his voice during commentary. Only matched by how Boycott speaks of Lara during the 92 WC for me... You know it has to have been special when greats like them start throwing around words like "mark this guy down. He will be an all timer" or stuff to that effect.
I didn't imply Richie rates that Perth knock better. I just meant that it was so good that it moved someone like Richie to talk that way about a guy just getting started in international cricket.Yeah Richie always says the Sydney knock was better.
That was as close to the classic Test match knock as anything Sachin has done. It had a bit of everything, taking the responsibility on his shoulders (was he the captain then? Don't think so.), guiding the lesser batsman and getting him to bat with him, showing technical faculties to survive on a difficult track... IT was every bit as good as Lara's 153 for me, only reason I still put the other one slightly ahead is the quality of attacks, although as Cevno pointed out, Sachin did face an attack that was very good on its own merits...It may have ended up in India losing ,due to a big bottle up by other batsmen(specially the last few) but that knock against Wasim Waqar and saqlain at his peak in the last innings of the chennai test in 1998 is probably his best knock ever, certainly among his best 3 -
That pitch wasn't the easiest to bat on just look at what Wasim did to Dravid just when Sachin Came in -

That alone would have been enough to intimidate the most. But he carried on to score 136 of 258 which India scored when all others got out . And let me tell you the others did not throw it away but were dismissed by great bowls too .
He started off really slowly but once he got going he took on every bowler and rattled Pakistan big time on a track which was seaming, swinging and spinning too.
