Johnson. Largely because he's done more than Aamer.
I think the whole point was ATM..to be Johnson ofcourse more experienced then Amir but right now if i had to choose three pace bowlers for a test..Amir would be third choice after Steyn and Asif.....but ofcourse you have your opinion.

Its a shame Shane Bond retired because if he was still playing, clearly he would be in the top 3...Johnson is clearly not good enough now to be the third best bowler in the world.

My ranking would then be Steyn, Asif, Bond.
This. One of my favorite bowlers......

Yeah, Waqar a yard quicker then Asif, and Wasim likewise with Amir. Hugely promising partnership though, and a joy to watch, but nowhere near other two yet.
may be in another 3-5 years and we would have a better idea if they are acutally of that calibre, but atm no way as lethal as 2Ws...like you said before injury Waqar was a gun...Asif can't match his pace....

In England, certainly. On Australian pitches Johnson would be the option. But I'd probably prefer Morkel on those decks anyway, largely for form reasons.

Failed to do it more often too tho, tbf. His batting's a bonus tho; out of all the serious options only really him and Broad would be able to play #8 (Aamir playing there in the recent series notwithstanding).
He's failed to get to grips with English conditions certainly, however his record in England isn't as terrible as you'd think.

His efforts against South Africa are too easily overlooked: check statsguru for how well South Africa's batsmen have done since Feb 2007 - they've been outstanding in that period, and Johnson completely and utterly owned them.

His batting has really gone backwards of late though which is a real shame because he is great fun to watch bat. Would still be tempted to go with him though he is still a wicketaking bowler no matter what he has served up in England but Aamer already not far away that is for sure.

With Swann probably in a world XI (some might go for Harbhajan) then he could take the number 8 slot.

In bowling??? I mean why is it that he is still the world's third best and not able to take advantage of the good bowling conditions???

While he's not there at the moment, Tim Bresnan looks like a great young fast bowling talent for England. I saw him bowl in Bangladesh and in the T20 World Cup and I must say, I am a fan of his work.

The length needed to bowl well in England is different to his default length, the guys who've performed better in England throw the ball up to the batsman more than Johnson does. Just a product of a different system and he hasn't been able to adapt yet.

So, the adjustment needed is to release the ball more then push it i guess.....actually on the 4th morning i thought he was doing that more and more..he was rolling the fingers more and trying to release the ball on good length and some of those deliveries were super....

ability to adapt is a quality as well.. Best bowlers should have that quality.
Steyn is the best bowler in the world not only because he takes wickets in South Africa and Australia but also because he adapted and owned Indian batsmen in India.

Abhumanyu Mithun, Ishant Sharma, Munaf Patel! My point stands.

Of course. That's why he's not rated the best in the world and certainly not as highly as Steyn.

Johnson being anywhere near the top 3 bowlers reflects poorly on batsmen across the world more so than it says anything about his own bowling which for all intents and purposes remains somewhere marginally above rubbish.

You've not seen him bowling well, have you? A Johnson near his best is nigh on unplayable under almost any conditions.

EDIT: I wonder if Johnson's struggles against Eng/Pak have anything to do with the fact that all their openers are left-handed. I have a feeling that Johnson is much, much better against right-handers than left-handers.

Bowler domination over cricket! Johnson is rarely or hardly ever at his best atm and even when he was on form he still sprayed it(to his advantage). But tbh he isn't the best I rate Hilfy ahead of him.

For me Steyn and Asif are head and shoulders above the rest in world cricket and Aamer may the 3rd best but it is far too early, yes he has enormous potential but he is still a pup in test terms. At the minute i would probably say Morkel as the 3rd best but there are a pack close together and Aamer may well be much better than them all in a year or so.

Then he will continue to struggle in the ashes then if England go in with Strauss,Cook and Morgan in the top 6.
