Top 3 fast bowlers in tests ATM?

If I had to pick three pacers for a team to play for my life, tomorrow, I'd pick Steyn, Asif and Aamer, in that order. It was hard to pick between Dougeh and Aamer before this series, but now, It's pretty clear for me.

Shane Warne, pretty ridiculously, said in commentary, that he'd have Aamer and Asif sharing the new ball in a World XI. Personally, I'd have Steyn and Aamer sharing the new ball, not because Aamer is a better bowler than Asif, just that Aamer is ruddy brilliant with it and Asif is just as good with the old ball as he is with the new one.

I always thought it was "Aamer" personally. Either way, it's too early to call him one of the 3 best quicks in the world.

Its funny how on series changes anything.. My top 3 would have been Steyn, Asif and Johnson and thats what I had voted for. Now after this series, suddenly I feel uncomfortable placing Johnson as the third best bowler in the world..and I also have a strong urge to place Aamer ahead of Steyn and Asif

Yeah pretty tough to say that "Johnson is the 3rd best quick in the world" after seeing most of his work in this series. I'm sure that'll "change" come December, though.

Failed to do it more often too tho, tbf. His batting's a bonus tho; out of all the serious options only really him and Broad would be able to play #8 (Aamir playing there in the recent series notwithstanding).

You mean Aamer being ranked so highly is over the top? Because the Aamer love is surely a personal thing. After a long time, Pakistan have a pace attack that looks to be as lethal and deadly as Wasim and Waqar. After a long time Pakistan have a fast bowler as supremely talented as Wasim. After a long time Pakistan has someone who can be the next Wasim. He has just won Pakistan a test match..You expect Pakistani fans to NOT love him for that?

As far as the ranking is concerned, yes I have repeatedly said on this thread that it is too early to rank him as the third best bowler in the world, not because of his average for which Athali provided a reasonable explanation but because he just hasn't played enough. For me he has to play at least 20 test matches to be considered in the same breath as the others.

Its a shame Shane Bond retired because if he was still playing, clearly he would be in the top 3...Johnson is clearly not good enough now to be the third best bowler in the world.

My ranking would then be Steyn, Asif, Bond.

Yeah the poor kid's had more catches dropped in one year than most (non-Pakistani) bowlers in their whole career.

Steady. I'm hugely impressed with the boy too, but those are some pretty huge shoes to fill.

Think the one thing Wasim & (especially) Waqar had over the current attack was their balls-out pace. Before his injury Waqar was greased lightening.

Yeah, Waqar a yard quicker then Asif, and Wasim likewise with Amir. Hugely promising partnership though, and a joy to watch, but nowhere near other two yet.

Waqar more like a few yards quicker than Asif...
And Boybrumby, those are definitely big shoes to fill. I didnt meant they are already there..but their performances in the last two test matches would be on par...its just that Wasim and Waqar did it consistently for years and years...it is to be seen how consistently these two deliver.

Well, something good has happened to Pakistan Cricket after ages and thats why I cant blame our Pakistani friends go all gaga over Aamer!

Also the way the kid bowled in 2 test series - he surely has the potential and lets hope he doesnt become the victim of popular Pakistani politics! [ Read Akram v Waqar here ]
