O'Neill at Liverpool would be all kinds of fail. Needs a massive chequebook to succeed, and in terms of scouting I'm not sure O'Neill knows that football is played outside the British Isles. IIRC he's in single figures in terms of foreign signings over the course of his entire managerial career. At Celtic in 5 years I can only recall him signing Bobo Balde from abroad.

edit: my bad, Joos Valgaeren came from abroad as well.
Because Liverpool in the past were not based upon players from all over the British Isles. Because Liverpool have never been about a hard working, slightly ugly, British style of football. Oh and of course O'Neill's career is full of mad spending to produce results.

TBH, Liverpool need a few more Brits and a few less mercenaries. One of the big gripes of Liverpool fans is the teams lost it's soul and core of players who are playing for the name of the club.
You quote "Liverpool fans" as though they're a group of people who have a function in life other than to be laughed at. I suspect the problem has more to do with the lack of general ability to play football than the lack of "soul".

****ing Rangers fans. Shut the ****ing **** up. Waaaaah O'Neill managed Celtic for a bit.

Leicester and Norwich he was fine without a massive cheque book, brought through the likes of Muzzy Izzet and Emily Heskey and made people like Steve Walsh and Steve Claridge look amazing somehow.
Be quiet, O'Neill has bought all his titles and Rangers have never spent any money:

Michael Ball wasn't exactly cheap either if I remember correctly, cost about £6.5m I recall.
Even to the point where they refused to play him so they didn't have to pay an appearance fee to Everton when he played a certain number of games.

I'm a huge O'Neill fan (insert generic rant about it being a ****ing disgrace that Dutch Schteve got the England gig ahead of him here) but Naahwich were probably his only failure as a boss. Did get Wycombe into the league for the first time tho.

Mother's a massive fan of the fat Welsh homo, so still curl up into the fetal position and cry whenever I hear that song.

The vegetable making all the right noises to be considered as Liverpool manager.

Think him being appointed would just maintain the status quo really.

Has been since 2000 tbh.

He's a good man manager, there's been a couple of players at Celtic (John Hartson being one IIRC) who were full of praise for his team talk at Anfield in 2003 when Celtic won 2-0. Also got the best out of players like Stilian Petrov and Johann Mjallby who were frankly duds under John Barnes.

His Celtic side cost an absolute fortune to assemble though, he spent over £30m in his first season in Glasgow and at one point Celtic's wage bill was in the top 10 in the UK, possibly even top 5. Rangers were pissing money down the drain at the time as well, but I don't see how that's got anything to do with my point. To win what he did at Celtic, O'Neill had to spend very heavily. He's also spent an absolute fortune at Aston Villa. Since moving to Celtic, his track record in terms of bringing through young players has been poor, which isn't something you want from a manager at a club £350m in the red.

O'Neill would need money at Liverpool to bring in his type of player, which generally speaking comes from the British market, which adds a further premium in terms of transfer fees. Given how limited O'Neill's been in the transfer market to date, I don't see how he can possibly return value for money for Liverpool by sticking to what's served him well so far.

Not exactly hard to win the SPL when you either manage Celtic or Rangers?
Let's ask Paul Le Guen: a triple Championnat winner at Lyon, and serial Champions League quarter finalist.

Comes to the SPL, and is mutually consented 6 months later with his Rangers team having been dumped out of the League Cup, at home, to lower league opposition, and clinging onto 2nd place, 17 points behind Celtic.

Succeeding at Rangers or Celtic isn't something anyone can do; the pressure to succeed at either club is greater than at any other club in the UK. Someone like Wenger would have been bulleted a long time ago.

Certainly something John Barnes can't do....

How'd Walter Smith get on at Everton?

Thomas Hitlzsperger makes his return to the Premier League with a free transfer to West Ham. Marcello Lippi has been touted around in Italy as Benitez's replacement. Scaly I can give you some Italian insults to use if Lippi makes a poor tactical decision in a match should this happen.

I suspect if the Liverpool management thought they could get Lippi in, Benitez would have been sacked yonks ago. That'd be some coup if they pull it off.

Umm don't really get this at all. Liverpool played a passing, possession game when they were dominant, the antithesis of O'Neill sides from what I can see.
