The fact that George got called up to NZ for the Test Squad makes it seem absolute mad that he's not making some peoples SACA XI in OD.

I know it's a different format, but you should be picking your two best pace bowlers, who cares how your no 10 and 11 bat.

Yeah, but were talking about the SACA here....there not very smart.

Depends on how number's 8 and 9 bat too, though. :D Plus, although a bloke with a lot of long form potential, hasn't exactly set the world alight in the games he's gotten, a fair proportion of his wickets coming at a ground not named Adelaide Oval. Not as if he's an unbackable selection yet.

EDIT: That said, with the seal of approval from CA, he'll probably play every game possible next season. Anyone know if he's headed to England?

Yeah agreed, Cleary and Duval are also decent bats and they would usually bat around 8 and 9. Don't think George is heading to England, isn't he at the Centre of Excellence?

Mickey Arthur has opened the door for sacked South Australian Mark Cosgrove to move to WA after saying the State team needed an experienced top-order batsman to complement its trio of internationals.

Arthur arrived in Perth yesterday to take up his three-year contract as Warriors coach and said he would start work immediately to lift WA cricket from its current doldrums.

"The job starts today," he said.

Arthur confirmed he had reports on Cosgrove's potential value after the heavyweight left-hander was axed following a series of disciplinary issues with the Redbacks.

But Arthur said he recognised that WA needed another high-quality top-order batsman, given that Marcus North, Adam Voges and Shaun Marsh were likely to have international commitments during the season.

"I don't know enough about Mark Cosgrove, but I have done some homework on him and have had conflicting reports," Arthur said.

"What I do think is that we possibly need another experienced batsman because runs on the board are a key.

"Scoreboard pressure makes a bowling attack a whole lot stronger and that allows a spinner to come into the game in four-day cricket, which is something WA have lacked for a bit.

"In terms of our erratic top-order batting, we clearly need another experienced player there. We have Marcus North, Adam Voges and Shaun Marsh, but we only see them sporadically, so in my opinion we need a guy who will be around permanently and be somebody that the younger players can feed off."

The coming week will be one of Arthur's most critical, with an assistant coach to be appointed in the next few days and the first round of player contracts to be lodged with Cricket Australia on Wednesday. The WACA has already axed several State players, including batsman Theo Doropoulos, leg-spinner Josh Mangan and all-rounder Justin Coetzee.

It is understood Arthur insisted WA retain spinner Aaron Heal, despite the selectors looking to cut him.

Former Australian paceman Jason Gillespie and WA international Brad Hogg are candidates to become Arthur's assistant. The former South African coach would not be drawn on whether fellow countryman, former paceman Allan Donald, also would be considered.

Arthur said he was excited about the challenge after helping steer South Africa to the pinnacle of world cricket in 2008.

His coaching philosophy would not change, with a series of non-negotiable parameters being applied. Every player would become clearly aware of their role.

"My major strength is managing and handling players and making sure they know exactly where they stand and what their roles are," he said. "It is paramount that guys must know what is expected of them. I will lay down those parameters to the players.

"There may be a little bit more required to tweak things technically at domestic level, but I am really looking forward to that.

"At international level it is more about managing players, managing teams and managing selections, but I am really looking forward to doing some hands-on coaching again.

"I have a series of non-negotiables and the players will know exactly where they stand.

"If you want to be successful and you want to be sustainable, there are non-negotiables. There are sacrifices that need to be made. There has to be a really strong work ethic, which is not to say that wasn't the case under Tom (Moody), but I will get stuck in and do it my way."

Yep, know a bit about him. Bowls left arm quicks, pretty sharp, especially for his age. Struggled this summer with injury. Nice smooth action though. Definitly not a spinner.

Is that side you just named for ODD or the 4 day team?

Because SA already have all assistant coach roles filled.

Any idea if Gillespie will make a decent coach? Anyone done any work with him?
Heard very good things about him from a few guys I know who have done a bit of stuff with him.

Would be great in a specialist role such as bowling, overall coach I have no idea.

Yeah, Gillespie will probably be an excellent coach or a great bowling coach which is exactly why he isn't at the SACA.

Haha finally Doran gets the boot.

Not too surprising list, I know Kruger doesn't have a great record but think he's a little unlucky to miss out.

Out of the 18 players (excluding Symonds) there is not many batting options.

Tasmania 1st round contracts

Tasmania squad: George Bailey, Travis Birt, Luke Butterworth, Steven Cazzulino, Ed Cowan, Gerard Denton, Xavier Doherty, Alex Doolan, Brendan Drew, James Faulkner, Brett Geeves, Adam Griffith, Ben Hilfenhaus (Cricket Australia contract), Jason Krejza, Rhett Lockyear, Tim Macdonald, Adam Maher, Tim Paine (CA), Ricky Ponting (CA), Jon Wells.

Rookies: Matthew Day, Brady Jones, Hamish Kingston, Jeremy Smith, Tom Triffitt

article:

The veteran batsman Michael Dighton has been left out of Tasmania's list of contracted players for 2010-11, a group with few other changes from last season's squad. The Tigers lost Daniel Marsh to retirement and did not re-sign the rookies John Rogers and Wade Irvine in the first round of offers, but the absence of Dighton was more of a surprise.

Although he has not been part of the first-class team since November 2008, Dighton, 34, has remained an important part of the Tasmania top order in the 50-over format. He played every match in their triumphant FR Cup campaign and two months ago scored 80 in their victory over Victoria in the final, and the coach Tim Coyle said Dighton could yet remain in the mix.

"He's played well for a number of years but his form, he would admit, has fluctuated in recent times," Coyle told Cricinfo. "He played a very good innings in the final but up to then he'd had an average year, and he would have admitted that himself. We know he's a quality player so we'll just see how things roll out next week."

The states must finalise their full lists by next Thursday, meaning Dighton could yet win a contract in the second round of offers. However, there is a large group of axed players from other states searching for a home this season, including several top-order batsman such as Mark Cosgrove, Nick Kruger, Greg Moller and Lloyd Mash.

The Tigers have added to their squad the batsman Steven Cazzulino, 23, who was the leading run scorer in Sydney grade cricket last summer with 1289 at 71.61. A left-hand opener who can bat for long periods, Cazzulino will aim to become Ed Cowan's opening partner in the Sheffield Shield after Jon Wells and Rhett Lockyear struggled to make the position their own in 2009-10.

There was no room for Rogers or Irvine in the first round of offers, while the bowler Hamish Kingston, 19, won a rookie contract. Despite finishing second last on the Sheffield Shield table last season, Tasmania were keen to retain stability by backing the core of their existing young squad.

"We've shown some faith in quite a number of people," Coyle said. "We had a number of new faces into the team last year. Having another major cleanout this year could have destablised the group.

"We blooded some players last year who did quite well - Alex Doolan, Brady Jones had some time as the wicketkeeper, Adam Maher played some cricket - all new players and developing players. There's still a lot of improvement in the group that we have."

Jason Krejza will spend the next couple of months recovering from hip surgery this week, although he is expected to be fully fit for the start of the pre-season. The other major injury worry is the ongoing knee problem for Ben Hilfenhaus, who this week started bowling again at the Centre of Excellence and is targeting the Australia A series against Sri Lanka A in late June for a possible comeback.

Hoping Dighton grabs a second round contract. Would back Dighton to score more runs in SS than Wells and Lockyear combined.

Rising star Mitchell Marsh has been granted a full-time contract with Western Australia for the 2010-11 domestic cricket season.

Marsh, who captained Australia to victory in last year's Under-19 World Cup in New Zealand, is considered one of the best young prospects in the domestic game.

The brother of Australian one-day player Shaun and son of former Test opener Geoff played six Sheffield Shield matches last season.

The 18-year-old has been upgraded from a rookie to a full-time contract along with all-rounder Nathan Coulter-Nile, while Victorian spinner Michael Beer, NSW quick Martin Paskal, all-rounder Matt Johnston and batsman Michael Swart are the other new faces on the Warriors' full-time list for next summer.

All-rounders Justin Coetzee, Theo Doropoulos and Drew Porter, paceman Ben Edmondson and leg-spinner Josh Mangan were not offered contracts for the upcoming summer.

New additions to the rookie contract list are paceman Ryan Duffield (Melville) and batsmen Tom Beaton (Mount Lawley), Jake Fawcett (Wanneroo) and Marcus Harris (Scarborough).

New Warriors coach Mickey Arthur said he's satisfied with the make-up of the full contract and rookie lists.

"We have secured arguably the leading spinner outside of the state system in Australia and one of the most promising quicks in grade cricket and have given a great opportunity to two promising local batsmen to show their wares at interstate level," Arthur said.

"We are very confident that we have a good balance of youth and experience in this squad to carry on the great work that has been done with the team in recent times."

WA squad 2010-11: Mike Hussey, Mitchell Johnson, Shaun Marsh, Marcus North, Adam Voges, David Bandy, Michael Beer, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Liam Davis, Brett Dorey, Aaron Heal, Michael Hogan, Matt Johnston, Brad Knowles, Steve Magoffin, Mitchell Marsh, Ashley Noffke, Martin Paskal, Luke Pomersbach, Wes Robinson, Luke Ronchi, Michael Swart, Luke Towers.

The comment was regarding Michael Beer I believe. Fair call to make, could be a good pickup for WA.

Allrounder Mark Cleary joins Victoria | Australia Cricket News | Cricinfo.com

The former South Australia allrounder Mark Cleary has signed with Victoria for next season, when they will aim to defend their Sheffield Shield and Big Bash titles. Cleary was the only major addition to the Bushrangers squad, which also includes the promising allrounder Alex Keath.

Nick Jewell was the major omission from the squad after declining a contract to focus on his coaching career at club and under-age levels. However, Jewell has not retired and will continue to play district cricket in Melbourne and be available for selection, having been one of Victoria's most consistent performers over the past few years.

The batsman Lloyd Mash and the rookies Steve Gilmour and Michael Topp were not offered deals, while Aiden Blizzard has already signed with South Australia. The fast bowler Rob Cassell's decision to also head to Adelaide gave a reprieve to the injury-prone Shane Harwood, who at 36 was on the verge of being cut from the squad.

The recruitment of the fast-medium bowler Cleary, who grew up in Mildura in Victoria, is a boost for the Bushrangers' all-round stocks. Cleary, 29, has 50 first-class matches to his name and had a strong summer in 2008-09, when he topped the Redbacks' Sheffield Shield wicket tally with 32 at 31.21.

"We've got a great mix of experienced senior cricketers and talented youngsters that will hold us in good stead throughout the season," the coach Greg Shipperd said. "As we saw last year, depth in the fast-bowling ranks is crucial, so the addition of Mark Cleary certainly helps that. He's a talented swing bowler who can contribute some handy lower-order runs and should fit into our squad well."

Victoria squad Dwayne Bravo, Mark Cleary, Aaron Finch, Shane Harwood, John Hastings, Michael Hill, Brad Hodge, Jon Holland, David Hussey, Alex Keath, Andrew McDonald (Cricket Australia contract), Bryce McGain, Clint McKay (CA), Dirk Nannes, Darren Pattinson, James Pattinson, Rob Quiney, Chris Rogers, Peter Siddle (CA), Matthew Wade, Cameron White (CA), Damien Wright.

Rookies Ryan Carters, Jackson Coleman, Brett Forsyth, Glenn Maxwell, Will Sheridan.

Theo Doropoulos is another player who i think has heaps of potential and I would be very happy if QLD went after him.

His List A record is pretty good, an average of 26 and SR of 93.47 is decent and he's produced some good match winning performances, obviously is a little inconsistent.
