I was wondering about the mid-1980's: an era when I genuinely cannot think of a single member of the side. The team that finished 16th out of 17 in 1978 maybe, but that was a case of good players under-achieving - we had people like Edrich, Roope, Younis, Jackman, Pocock and Butcher. Finished third the following season with virtually the same squad.
Dismal losing though, should have easily manged to bat that out at the end, **** start to the season with Durham next we will have played 2 lost 2 unless there is some bad weather.Quality first round, results-wise. Not sure how high the standard of the batting can have been in certain places though.
Also all credit to Hampshire for going for the runs, they could easily have pulled out a bit earlier and not lost.
I should've remembered Jack Richards - there's not been many keepers make Ashes hundreds. And I suppose I should have realised that Stewart was around then, albeit pretty young in the mid1980's. I'd forgotten about Medlycott - went to WI in 1990 didn't he? Jesty must have been about 40 - I still think of him as a Hampshire player first & foremost.Alec Stewart was still a full-time Surrey player then; also Trevor Jesty, Andy Needham, Jack Richards, Keith Medlycott ... useful players all if not exactly world-beaters.
The pace bowling was weak then certainly. Richard Doughty anyone?
RtD is easily the best non-test cricketer around. I know I'm biased, but this is a claim I can defend seriously.RTD! Holy cow, what a guy. Not the first time he's pulled a victory out of his proverbial arse.
Damn right we are.RTDAS celebrating aws.
Depends on what you mean exactly. The best player playing for a country other than the Test nations, or the best current player not to have played Test cricket? If the latter, oooohhhh, big call.RtD is easily the best non-test cricketer around. I know I'm biased, but this is a claim I can defend seriously.
Just wondering, have the Saffies ever tried to get him into their Test team? Not that they really need an all-rounder, with Kallis in, but still...
Though I did mean the former, I can't seriously think which player is better than RtD, yet has never played a test.Depends on what you mean exactly. I'd suggest quite a considerable amount to be honest - a county average of 41 with the bat and 36 with the ball is not actually that good.Though I did mean the former, I can't seriously think which player is better than RtD, yet has never played a test.
So, name a few please. I can't think of any.I'd suggest quite a considerable amount to be honest - a county average of 41 with the bat and 36 with the ball is not actually that good.
