Just got home and checked the scorecard from the early game. Holy heck.

For Bollinger to get a sub-4 economy is amazing. For RR to get close to that total is amazing.

Aside from Bollingers great catch on the boundary it's been a pretty ordinary night in the field for all concerned. Hayden dropped one and let one go through his feet, Watto dropped one and Ojha put down one that would make K.Akmal proud.

However bravo is still struggling. I think he will have to make way for jaya. People talk about pollard being a failure in this IPL. I disagree. He's contributed what's required of him and in the process of going for the big ones has been caught at the ropes which has brought his average down.
What Pollard has done is what could reasonably have been expected of him. Unfortunately, it is not worth the massive wage which he is being paid.

Is it right to combat a one-dimensional attacking style like Gilchrists (ball coming onto the bat) with one-dimentional captaincy by opening the bowling with a spinner?

Like, now that Gibbs faces the first ball, the point is mooted. That's the second game in a row where Gilchrist hasn't fallen to a spinner in the first over. It's done.

Wages aren't a factor here. He's contributing and MI are winning. He has not done anything imho to be called a failure as regards to his performance so far, bringing in wages to the equation is injustice to the man as it was not under his control.

Good point. Some may say more accurately that he is not worth his money but you're probably right that he has performed adequately in a winning team. That being said, the test will come if he can fight when the team is in some trouble, though that doesn't look like happening much this year.

I think it's harsh to brand opening with Bhajji as unidimensional. First of all it was Gibbs who took strike so there is no conclusive way of saying it was a move solely targeted at Gilly. Secondly the pitch was very sluggish and scoring runs right from start was going to be difficult. Hence Mi decided to use their best bowlers Bhajji and Slinger as they had the best chance of containing these two, and since the pitch was only getting more and more difficult to bat on, the pressure of chasing a big total, etc would mean the lesser bowlers could be utilised later as well.

The plan worked perfectly. DC were put on a leash and lost their big guns early. When mclaren, pollard etc came on the match was firmly in their grasp.

True, basically every team has opened with a spinner at some point (Yusuf, Mishra, Rohit) for varied success, but that is every now and again. In 4 out of the past 5 games, the opposition team has opted for a spinner to open against Deccan - in Mumbai (+Navi), Calcutta and Cuttack. The other game Gilchrist was still out in the first over anyway.

I didn't actually see any of the television coverage of tonights game, so it was probably indeed a sluggish pitch. But it would be interesting to see how the ratio of spinners to pacemen in an opening over varies amongst opposition (if it varies at all)

I really do think that if Mumbai can remove Mclaren for someone better, they could have a flawless team. Mclaren is solid, but slightly below the standard set by the other Mumbai players (of course, he is expected to be better than the Indians, as an overseas player, but you catch my drift).

Yes, Mi look well settled in all departments. The fact that they've not been dismissed even once and run rate shows how good their batting lineup is. They possess one of the best bowling lineups atleast on paper. In fact They've been so good that Satish, bravo, Mclaren all have retained their places despite being below par or underutilised.

Now that they're more or less guaranteed a semi spot, we will see a bit of rotation coming in. However disturbing a winning combo is not exactly desirable as it ban affect the momentum. So large scale changes are a no no. I would like to see no more than 2 changes at a time. And no players of the current lineup rested for more than 2 matches.

Jayasurya should get a game while bravo or Mclaren can sit out. Tiwary can be replaced with tare and give rayudu a break from gloves.

**** me, I know Murali Vijay will rightly get plaudits for his innings, but Bollinger's won that for Chennai.

tbh, I was just glad to see some Australians actually do something worthwhile in their teams cause. Others have touched on this earlier in the thread, the teams that are doing the best in this tourney so far either have no Australians or just got one.

Briliant batting by Vijay. Hope he continues like that. A kolkatta defeat today would also do a lot of good for Chennai and finally

Bollinger desereved MOTM. He was the difference b/w the teams.

I'm liking the idea more and more of a say 15 man line-up in 20/20 cricket, might make it somewhat interesting.

Was hoping McCullum would play tonight, if nothing else for the right/left-hand combination, not to mention Gayle's average form of late
