***Official New Zealand Domestic Season Thread 2009/10

But ND have already wrapped up the title, they picked up first innings points yesterday.
They actually wrapped it up earlier, when Auck got 1st innings lead. Canty needed 2 pts for 1st innings lead + 6 pts for outright win to equal ND points total. Number of wins owuld then have been equal. But Canty had better Net Runs Per Wicket going into the game, so had a good chance of it being better on the way out, so could have snatched the title ...

Thought I'd try an end of season report card.

Winners

Michael Bates: Manfully carried a depleted Auckland bowling attack with plenty of energy (and wickets). Given the sameness of the current NZ bowling lineup he could come into consideration if he has another good season next year.

Luke Woodcock: Fell an agonising 12 runs short of 1000 in the season. Another excellent year, although unfortunately with the rise of Williamson and the return of Ryder, it is unlikely he will ever wear a Black Cap

Kane Williamson: Awful at one end of the season and unstoppable at the other (before lapsing back into mediocrity in the final couple of rounds). Will probably debut for NZ before the year is out.

Hopkins/van Wyk: Both keepers have had brilliant seasons, and with McCullum toying with the idea of becoming a specialist bat, these two will have plenty of incentive to push on next year.

Losers

Tarun Nethula: After his exciting debut season last year, it was disappointing to watch Nethula struggle badly for Auckland. Couldn't make the side in the second half of the year, though I hope Paul Strang gives him another shot next year.

Daniel Flynn: After getting dropped from the BC's, Flynn has continued his forgettable form throughout the summer. Being elevated to an opener for ND probably hasn't helped things.

Bruce Martin: Another attrocious season for the man once considered as the 2nd best spinner in New Zealand. Has probably been surplanted by Williamson as ND's number 1 spinner.

Neil Wagner. A season return of 28 wickets at 37.3 was probably not quite what we were all hoping for after he arrived with much talk about his pace and swing last year.

Keep an eye on:

Todd Astle: After years of failure as an opening bat for Canterbury, Astle has decided to moonwalk in Mark Richardson's footsteps by trying his hand as a legspinner. 3 games in, and so far he's been a stunning success.

Adam Milne: 17, and notably quick according to FC stalwart Matthew Bell, Milne grabbed a bunch of wickets in his first couple of games at a good average before the inevitable debilitating injury emerged. Surely one to inspire frustration and hand-wringing in years to come.

Josh Brodie: A player fashioned in the true tradition of New Zealand opening batsmen, and with plenty of runs to boot. His season was curtailed by injury but he'll be one to watch next year.

Any contributions?

Jeez, every game this round looks like it was played on SH1.

Sherlock did alright for himself picking up 7 on the CM landing strip, it would be good if someone could work with him on accuracy and consistency.
He's a bit like an out-of-form Mitch Johnson, good wicket taking balls hidden in a heap of crap.

Really? He seemed to perform far better as an opener than in the middle order this season.

Ah, too easy in the end. Can see Northern holding onto the Plunket Shield for sometime it must be said, far and away the best squad going around.

Nah, ND are no where near the Canterbury of the 90s.

Your two best batsmen are (or soon will be) full time Black Caps, so you're looking for a batting line up. Yovich won't always come to the recue. The bowling will be strong, but the batting is the weakest of all the sides once Watling and Williamson are removed.

Well I didn't say the were/or would be the kind of team Canterbury were in the 90's, but looking over our team at the moment it's fair to say most of them will be around for quite awhile yet. Michael Parlane maybe being the only one to retire within the next year.

Northern's bowling depth at the moment is just crazy, we've got a couple of former under 19 players that haven't been able to get a game yet and had they been playing anywhere else they probably would have. Then we have the likes of Aldridge and Scott who again would make any team in the country, also theres Trent Boult who should be back to full fitness next season (hopefully pushing for a spot in the BC team), plus Tim Southee and Brent Arnel.

Honestly, has a New Zealand domestic team ever had that kind of bowling depth?

ND's full strength XI at the moment:

1.BJ Watling
2.Michael Parlane
3.Kane Williamson
4.Hamish Marshall
5.Daniel Flynn
6.James Marshall
7.Daniel Vettori
8.Peter McGlashan
9.Graeme Aldridge
10.Tim Southee
11.Brent Arnel

Yovich, Scott, Boult, Wilson, Martin missing out and they've all played for New Zealand A at some point, four of them in the last two and abit years. Oh and Te Ahu Davis who couldn't even get a game this season yet played against the Lions just last year.

Not Terrible
If Wellington's seamers get fit and Brodie comes back I reckon Wellington have a good team, and an excellent fullstrength lineup.
Brodie
Bell/Parlane
Merchant
Ryder
Franklin
Woodcock
