Thought I'd try an end of season report card.
Winners
Michael Bates: Manfully carried a depleted Auckland bowling attack with plenty of energy (and wickets). Given the sameness of the current NZ bowling lineup he could come into consideration if he has another good season next year.
Luke Woodcock: Fell an agonising 12 runs short of 1000 in the season. Another excellent year, although unfortunately with the rise of Williamson and the return of Ryder, it is unlikely he will ever wear a Black Cap
Kane Williamson: Awful at one end of the season and unstoppable at the other (before lapsing back into mediocrity in the final couple of rounds). Will probably debut for NZ before the year is out.
Hopkins/van Wyk: Both keepers have had brilliant seasons, and with McCullum toying with the idea of becoming a specialist bat, these two will have plenty of incentive to push on next year.
Losers
Tarun Nethula: After his exciting debut season last year, it was disappointing to watch Nethula struggle badly for Auckland. Couldn't make the side in the second half of the year, though I hope Paul Strang gives him another shot next year.
Daniel Flynn: After getting dropped from the BC's, Flynn has continued his forgettable form throughout the summer. Being elevated to an opener for ND probably hasn't helped things.
Bruce Martin: Another attrocious season for the man once considered as the 2nd best spinner in New Zealand. Has probably been surplanted by Williamson as ND's number 1 spinner.
Neil Wagner. A season return of 28 wickets at 37.3 was probably not quite what we were all hoping for after he arrived with much talk about his pace and swing last year.
Keep an eye on:
Todd Astle: After years of failure as an opening bat for Canterbury, Astle has decided to moonwalk in Mark Richardson's footsteps by trying his hand as a legspinner. 3 games in, and so far he's been a stunning success.
Adam Milne: 17, and notably quick according to FC stalwart Matthew Bell, Milne grabbed a bunch of wickets in his first couple of games at a good average before the inevitable debilitating injury emerged. Surely one to inspire frustration and hand-wringing in years to come.
Josh Brodie: A player fashioned in the true tradition of New Zealand opening batsmen, and with plenty of runs to boot. His season was curtailed by injury but he'll be one to watch next year.
Any contributions?
