Haha, know him (well, more his old man) so have been pumping him up to mates before the pre-season.

Be great to see a rookie nab a Rising Star (see what I did there?). Has one ever done it before? Was Pearce one?
He can't, he's ineligible because he's too old.

And yes, Pearce was a rookie.

I've picked the Rising Star around 6-8 rounds in every year of the last 5 years. And to be honest, its pretty obvious.

Only Pearce/Raines was tough in 2006.

Otherwise

2005 - Deledio (easy lock)
2006 - Danyle Peace (tough but was still favourite)
2007 - Joel Selwood (has there ever been a safer bet?)
2008 - Rhy Palmer (easy lock)
2009 - Daniel Rich (yes there has been a safer bet to Joel Selwood, it was Rich).

They were all locks by about round 6-8. I plan on doing the same thing again this year as you generally get juicy odds.
Surely Rhys Palmer wasn't an easy lock? He was the favourite but it was tight between him and Rioli. In my mind it's a joke that Rioli didn't get it, because what he did far, far outweighed anything that Palmer achieved in his first season, and probably ever will in his career.

Opening up old wounds from 2008 here. :p

I think Naitanui only has to have a half decent season and the media exposure will ensure he gets the award. Didn't have the best game on Saturday (it wasn't a game for ruckmen) but even then there were plenty of climax's in the commentary box.

Well if commentary box climaxes were all that was required, and Barlow was eligible, he'd have it sewn up after round one. BT needed to wipe himself down by the third quarter.

Hurley or Zaharakis could win it but i can see media hype getting Natanui or one of the Dees top 2 the award.

Zaharakis definitely a chance for this week's nomination. Would be surprised if he didn't get another nomination to back up the one he got last year at some stage.

Any other candidates for this week? Chris Yarran, Jordie McKenzie, Todd Banfield, NicNat and Cameron Hitchcock would make up the rest of the main candidates I think.

Rioli is probably my favourite player right now, so I wish he won it too.

But in reality, a guy that averaged as many disposals as Palmer did in his first season as an AFL player will never not get the award.

Rioli in the Grand Final > anything Palmer did that year though :D

That being said, I take your point. Perhaps my money wasn't as safe as I thought, heh.

Zaharakis was definitely awesome this week. Good chance. He started quite well last year before tapering off. Averaged a **** load of shots on goal or something in his first few weeks.

Jack must be in with a shout, was awesome in the second half, got us within touching distance towards the end. But the fact we lost will go against him. Reckon Yarran will get it.

I missed the second half, but how did Bastinac go? He must have touched it a fair bit. Massive fan of that guy, reckon if he can get through the season he'll be really flying by the end of it.

Yeah think hes been our leading goal kicker throughout the pre-season.

Yarran this weeks nominee.
