Got knocked out of the UEFA Cup at the first time of asking that season as well

'Twas Villareal who knocked them out of the CL

It made me very happy

Never forgiven Fifa for letting Liverpool in that year, was a joke. Make up the rules as you go along.
The bigger joke is how can a team be the best team in Europe and then not even manage to finish in the top 4 in their own domestic league.
Holders have always been given automatic quali status, is why Notts Forest have 1 old Division One title and 2 European Cups to their name.

To be fair to Uppercut, I don't think his argument is "reigning champions shouldn't automatically qualify to defend their title" but that there was a clear rule, whether it made sense or not, that a team had to finish in the top 4 of the Premier League to qualify. This rule was changed for Liverpool.

I guess we can draw parallels with the recent discussion about being able to assault someone on the field of play without any future punishment if it was deemed the ref "dealt with it" at the time (yes Stevie G, I'm looking at you). It's a stupid rule, but it's there and it always gets followed.

hmm...so how come Real Madrid were in the CL after this season then?

The rule was, if the European Cup winners did not finish in the top four, the national league had the decision on whether whoever finished fourth or whoever won the CL would get the final CL place. Spain chose Real Madrid (obvz), but when it happened in England they chose Everton.

I couldn't agree more that not having the holders in the tournament would have been stupid. But those were the rules that were made in advance and set in stone. It was an eventuality that was always going to happen one day and UEFA made a ruling to cover it, then changed their minds as soon as it actually happened.

The real victims were Zaragoza, who finished fourth that season in Spain and never played in the Champions League because the rules stated that only four teams for one country could enter. If only they'd indicated that the goalposts were so flexible a few years earlier.

Ah, didn't realise there was an extra step there. Actually makes it even more ridiculous that the rule was ignored.

yeah, read up on it after I posted.

Nevertheless, the FA weren't exactly consistent on this issue either.

(and yes, it was pretty dumb to leave it up to different interpretations in different countries. Like that wouldn't cause a ****storm somewhere)

The real victim was actually me tbh. On CM 03-04 I got Southampton to 4th, quite the feat I'm sure you'll agree. Newcastle only went and won the CL and I got dumped into the ****ing UEFA Cup. I was raging.

van Persie back in 2-3 weeks apparently. Could be what we need to get over the hump in the last few games. Incredible option to have off the bench.

Am I right in saying the FA Cup final is on 15 May this year? Seems a tad early - has everything been moved earlier to accommodate the WC?

Probably also moved up a week because the CL final is on 22 May - the first time it's been held on a Saturday.

Yeah, things get bumped up for the WC generally. I remmeber back in 02 the season finished in April.

Out of curiosity, do Europa League winners qualify for the Champions League if they don't qualify already through their domestic league?
