Garfield Sobers vs Dennis Lillee If you've not seen Sobers bat, then you have to give this video a watch.

That was a great video. Loved the recollection by Sobers and Lillee.

“He’s got the ball, I’ve got the bat. We’ll see”.

Also good to see that Lillee applauded Sobers’ inning, even though Sobers got the best of him in that matchup.

Don't wish to re-hash what I said yesterday, but I honestly cannot recall a top class batsman so still until point of delivery as Sobers is in that clip. It may have been more common in his time, but these days most top layers will move slightly at least before the ball is bowled.

At least, that's how it seems to me anyways. Anyone got any thoughts on whether this is strictly a modern phenomenon or whether Sobers was unusual even for his time in this regard?

Would be pretty damn intimidating as a quick, I imagine, just running in and seeing someone completely still and utterly composed at the crease.

Sobers had such a huge backlift too.. Must have been like a coiled spring. Wish I'd seen him play live.

When you bat your majority of your career at 5 and below then you are a lower-middle order batsman and yes it does make a difference because if you are so great then you shouldn't have to have more then 1 lesser batsman bat ahead of you in the middle order.

Where someone bats is completely unimportant to how good they are. If someone can maximise their talent best by batting at five rather than three, then that's where they should bat.

If Sobers was best utilised batting below Kanhai, Butcher and Nurse, then that was where it was right for him to bat, as he did for a few years.

TBH, one of the few times I agree with Richard. The second sentence at least.

I know it's often difficult to tell when Richard makes a joke, especially if he doesn't point it out that it was in jest in capital letters afterwards - but that just looked "tongue-in-cheek" to me.
