Yeah, because it was so much easier to bat down the order during Sobers' era. When the pitch had flattened out, the bowlers weren't fresh, the ball was old and there was no reverse swing. Happy days. Sure, he probably was a great batsman, but he lessened the extent of his greatness by batting down the order.

I dont think you deserve the time I was going to take to write a really detailed note on the subject.

Keep dreaming :)

:-O

Don't wish to re-hash what I said yesterday, but I honestly cannot recall a top class batsman so still until point of delivery as Sobers is in that clip. It may have been more common in his time, but these days most top layers will move slightly at least before the ball is bowled.

At least, that's how it seems to me anyways. Anyone got any thoughts on whether this is strictly a modern phenomenon or whether Sobers was unusual even for his time in this regard?

I remember one coach telling me when I was young, that "trigger movements" tended to be the nature of the mere mortals.

Yeah, not a bad shout that.

And Jack, love that quote. Brilliant.

Would be pretty damn intimidating as a quick, I imagine, just running in and seeing someone completely still and utterly composed at the crease.

Sobers had such a huge backlift too.. Must have been like a coiled spring. Wish I'd seen him play live.

When you bat your majority of your career at 5 and below then you are a lower-middle order batsman and yes it does make a difference because if you are so great then you shouldn't have to have more then 1 lesser batsman bat ahead of you in the middle order.
Where someone bats is completely unimportant to how good they are. If someone can maximise their talent best by batting at five rather than three, then that's where they should bat.

If Sobers was best utilised batting below Kanhai, Butcher and Nurse, then that was where it was right for him to bat, as he did for a few years.

Ben, cheers for reminding me why you're on my ignore list.
Oi, you're not allowed to have people on <ignore> now you're a Mod. It impacts on your ability to moderate the forums, y'know?

Also TBF I've never really approved of discussions on "I have such-and-such on <ignore>" on forums - to me it's no different to "such-and-such is a ****".

Richard, if there's an issue with a mod or one of their decisions, please send us an email or report the post rather than making posts like these; understand that they look a lot like you trying to tell the mods how to do the job.

TBH, one of the few times I agree with Richard. The second sentence at least.

I know it's often difficult to tell when Richard makes a joke, especially if he doesn't point it out that it was in jest in capital letters afterwards - but that just looked "tongue-in-cheek" to me.
