Christ reading through Kieswetter's innings on Cricinfo... it's like he was nearly out every over up until the last 15. Were they exaggerating or was he really that hopeless against spin bowling on pitches that are slow enough to allow you to get away with a lot of mistakes?

Anyway Flower defending the training methods. The results speak for themselves really. The number of injuries is ridiculous and as I've said before some of the things like standing on a 4 foot high pile of tyres are pretty stupid.

He didn't give a chance early in his innings at all. He edged a yorker along the ground down to 3rd man for 4 off the seamer and was guiding the spinners down to 3rd man. There were a couple of LBW appeals, but none of them were out. He didn't look great against spin early on (looked quite tentative and nervous), but he certainly didn't look hopeless. Once he'd got rid of the nerves he started playing properly and looked a class player. Was playing the spinners with ease by the end of the innings, using his feet beautifully. Certainly wasn't an innings that showcased him to be this '****ing horrible' player you were telling us about last night.

I said he'd yet to show that he was anything but a ****ing horrible ODI player. He's scored runs at a decent rate on a Somerset road. He seems to be godawful against spin bowling and hasn't shown anything yet against top notch seam either. Since he's crap with the gloves you have to judge him purely as a batsman.

Meanwhile we have numerous other players he's just magically leapfrogged.

Id have given him LBW in the first couple of overs but on reply I would have been wrong.

I say this, not as a criticism, but as something we need to accept. If you have an interesting or unusual backstory it promotes your chances of playing. It is the English way, if not human nature. I dont like it but I understand it.

Looked nervous against spin early in his innings (and rightfully so, he was under pressure to score some runs, and he's not used to facing spin in over 3) but once he was in he played the spinners with ease, even Shakib. He was rotating the strike nicely with some nifty wrist work, was using his feet brilliantly, is capable of sweeping and has the power to hit sixes. Looked a very talented batsman today, especially straight and through cover.

Also, he averages 46.28 in List A cricket away from Taunton. As I said before, I feel he's deserved his call-up. He's done everything he needed to do. He scored runs for Somerset at a good rate, came into the Lions squad and outscored everyone (outscored Davies in every game they played together), played well against England for the Lions, then scored 140 on debut for England in the warm-up and after a shaky start to his International career in his first 2 matches, he scored a fantastic hundred in his 3rd. Can't see why he's still being slagged off tbh.

43.71 according to CricketEurope, but that's bloated by two recent centuries as he's not played many games - one of those where he was dropped four times. All against piss poor opposition. He's not proved anything yet.

And I definitely agree about the past having a strong influence. Like if you play for Durham you're going to be constantly under the microscope from the media and treated like **** by the selectors. Foreign background is a great advantage, as is playing for a southern club and doing well on Sky.

Bangladesh are a decent side at home but whenever they are in a good position they shoot themselves. Just when Mushfiqur and Aftab seemed to be building a good partnership there came the stupid run out. When will they learn to win regularly?

When they begin to compete against lesser sides and gain some momentum or when they improve their consistency at least over the period of a full day.

Winning is a habit that Bangladesh have yet to develop.

Tamim, Aftab, Mushfiqur and Shakib is the makings of a pretty decent top 5.

Outrageously talented batsman. Fantastic hand-eye coordination. One day, he will take an attack apart for more than 20 minutes.
I possibly rate him highly because I've seen probably his 2 best ODI knocks - vs Australia at Cardiff and vs South Africa at the World Cup - but he's always seemed to me to have everything you'd want from an ODI batsman - got all the shots and for a small guy can smack a long ball - his problem has always been mental. His dismissal in the 1st ODI and the one played yesterday sums him up sadly.
