**Official** West Indies domestic season 2010

It's thinking like yours that's allowed players to just get by with being mediocre just because they're promising. Every other team uses performance as a judge for selection, why should the WI be different?
So we should just allow the senior players who are in the team now to be "mediocre" then?

Well he's a better captain than Chris Gayle that's for sure!! .
From what I understand Ganga is actually a pretty good captain. Some people are born for it/natural leaders, some are not, but you would have to agree though, Ganga would have to show that he is worthy of a spot in the Test team to be captain. In other words he shouldn't be picked as a specialist captain.

In any case with Barath and Braithwaite coming up through ranks, it would be a very backwards step to go back to Ganga, providing there was the injury crisis of all injury crisis's.

Yep i'd never recall Ganga, he's a thing of the past, as you say with Brathwaite coming through there's no point, i really wonder what Gibson is thinking right now?!! with the rumours of Gayle being dropped for tonights game i'm sure he's not impressed, Ottis is lucky he missed that shambles in the ODI's though, he's got a clean sheet to work from and i really hope he's open minded enough to look at other options when it comes to players and the captaincy.

Yeah, Guillen has been good, and I think he might be an option, if he finishes the season well....

Probably not for ODI cricket, since he's a slowish accumulator, much like Shiv. My only concern is that his 361 runs have come at an average of 36. I would like to see him end the season with a flourish, and get that average closer to 45.

I know my criteria is a tough one, but this is what I'd like to see our potential batsmen do this season:
1) Play an entire domestic season.

2) Average over 40 for the season.

3) Hit at least one century during the season.

4) Finish in the top ten run-getters for the season.

I'm not asking too much, now, am I?
:)
Barath fulfilled all four 'requirements' last season....
I don't think you are asking too much, in fact I think realistically batsman should do this for 2 consecutive seasons before getting the call up. If there is an absolute gun batsman who is averaging 60 or so after a year and a half I wouldn't mind that much if he was given a shot.

Darren Ganga's captaincy of the West Indies during the tour of England a few years ago was criticised by WI and English critics for being extremely negative - more negative than Chris Gayle, who took over during the subsequent ODI series....

Anyway, here are the stats with just one round to go, bearing in mind that Barbados have completed their fixtures....

The leading runscorers so far are....

1) Dale Richards (Barbados) 457 runs @ an average of 45.7

2) Ryan Hinds (Barbados) 446 runs @ 44.6, one century

3) Jason Haynes (Barbados) 432 runs @ 39.2

4) Andre Fletcher (Windwards) 431 runs @ 47.8

5) Kirk Edwards (Barbados) 425 runs @ 38.6

6) Justin Guillen (Trinidad) 361 runs @ 36.1, one century

7) Devon Smith (Windwards) 353 runs @ 35.3, one century

8) Denesh Ramdin (Trinidad) 340 runs @ 113, two centuries

9) Wavell Hinds (Jamaica) 330 runs @ 110, one century

10) Omari Banks (Leewards) 316 runs @ 31.6

11) Donovan Pagon (Jamaica) 309 runs @ 38.6

Spinners once again dominate the bowling....

1) Imran Khan (Trinidad) 34 wickets @ an average of 16

2) Pedro Collins (Barbados) 26 wickets @ 17

3) Ryan Austin (CCC) 26 wickets @ 18

4) Amit Jaggernauth (Trinidad) 25 wickets @ 23

5) Shane Shillingford (Windwards) 25 wickets @ 24

6) Kavesh Kantasingh (CCC) 24 wickets @ 19

7) Rawl Lewis (Windwards) 23 wickets @ 21

8) Odean Brown (Jamaica) 23 wickets @ 25

9) Nikita MIller (Jamaica) 22 wickets @ 12

10) Omari Banks (Leewards) 22 wickets @ 18

11) Davendra Bishoo (Guyana) 21 wickets @ 25

Aside from the two Hinds, I can't see any other batsmen really impressing, except for Ramdin. Guillen and Fletcher need to have an outstanding final round, IMHO. Collins has earned a recall, IMHO, because he's been bowling on tracks which are murder for our poor pacers.

Now that I look at the stats, Bess's wickets came at an expensive average of 33, so I'm not sure....

Nah Collins is too old now, the only bowlers who should be considered are Kantasingh and Khan imo, also Fletcher and Gullien are a must, the batting on display recently by WI has been nothing short of embarrassing, Gayle was shambolic once again today, let Gullien take his place against Zimbabwe, btw Mike have you got anything to say about that article i posted?.

I disagree with Murray....

I feel that we should select the best players at all times, regardless of their age. Even if our players are not the best in the world, we not to put up our strongest team whenever possible, and not underestimate the Zimbabweans.

Our problem is not in the oldsters in the side. It is far deeper than that. When you look at the quality of batting in particular in the domestic competition, you can see that there's no one really demanding selection to the WI side.

IMHO, both Fletcher and Guillen have to have very good final round matches to get the attention of the selectors for the tour by South Africa....

Maybe Fletcher will get a look-in for the ODIs. I'm not sure that Guillen's game is suited to that format.

The thing where we disagree is it is the old stars who aren't standing up, Chanders for the last year and Gayle recently, the only one i ain't got a problem with is Sarwan, we can play the "stars" and beat Zimbabwe easily but what do we gain from that? nothing, if we play some young players and they do well it could give Gibson a lot more options for when we face South Africa.

It's just my opinion, but I don't really care too much about what Gayle has done in ODI or T20, but in his last two Tests, he has scored centuries, that has to count for something. I think he can be excused a little bit for Brisbane since he was still jet lagged.

The problem is he's just too inconsistent, and more often than not it's costing us big style, everyone knows when he gets going he's a monster but that happens once in a blue moon these days, the way he was owned by Bollinger was just terrible to watch, a good batsman addresses that issue after the second time it happens, not let it continue five times in a row.

I agree with Craig....

At the end of the day, it's the results in the Tests that really stand the test of time. Who remembers what happened in the three ODIs between England and West Indies back in 1984? We all remember that WI beat England 5-0 in the Tests....

Gayle's last Test series was a good one, and Sarwan had an excellent year as a Test batsman.

You're only as good as your last game, or in Gayles case last six games , two good games out of nine isn't impressive, lets remember he was garbage in the first test too.

Windie, Test cricket is a very different format from ODI cricket....
:)
In assessing Gayle's performance in the Test side, and his possible selection to play the Tests against South Africa, you have to look at how he played in the Test series - not the ODi series.

Two good innings out of six don't prove anything, to totally ignore his shocking performances in the ODI and t20's is simply naive Mike, his failure to address his weakness against Bollinger was embarrassing to watch, i'm glad he's been left out for Sunday's game.

ODI and T20 form has nothing to do with Test selection.

I think the pressure on Gayle to preform was huge. If he didn't fire, then you may as well have shook hands and called the game off. There was only going to be one result. Dowlin maybe a joker, but you have to concede that he is only getting a game because of injuries, not his fault really, just not enough quality depth, or guys that a ready to replace him.

WIndie, out of interest, where in the Caribbean are you from? If you don't want to answer, then that is fine.
