AB de Villiers: "It is going to be a great challenge here at the Eden Gardens. I'm pretty sure India will come back with a big fight" .

What are your takes on his comments??? Can India really bounce back and trounce the Africans given that it has been a habit of India after a major setback in first matches?

The beauty of this rivalry is it is so unpredictable. After the first two days, I thought it was a good pitch for batting and Sehwag, Gambhir and Tendulkar would have a feast. Instead, Steyn feasted on them. But at the same time, what Steyn did in the first match is a rare case..this kind of thing does not happen too often in cricket. South Africa did lose their 1-0 lead last time..and India hate losing at home..they are sure to come back hard..whether it will be good enough to beat a confident SA team is the question..it all depends on how the pitch behaves and how South African players fare..if they fare aswell as they did in the last test, they will win the match.

Smith's got a broken finger, should play but probably out of the ODI series and Bouch's back has flared up again. Will probably play but like Smith, he shouldn't be around for the ODI's.

Pitch and conditions

Ever since it became obvious India were losing in Nagpur, speculation was rife that another underprepared track might come to India's rescue in the decider. Not this time. "There is a bit of grass on the wicket so I think the seamers will get a bit of help," MS Dhoni said of the pitch. "It looks quite hard… I don't see much turn happening on the first two days."

Because the Eden Gardens is being redone, the atmosphere won't quite be the same. Forget 90,000, they will struggle to get 45,000 in. "There is no stands on one side of the ground so you can see a bit of breeze going across the field so there will be a bit of help for the seamers," Dhoni said.
A few things to consider before picking the playing 11:
1. The pitch is not a rank turner.
2. SA could bat safely and play the survival game.

When a team plays survival game, either you need a pitch that doesn't allow that (rank turner) or a bowling attack that forces breakthroughs (like SA did in the last test)

I think Ind needs to play 2 spinners as that's a good bet for picking up wkts especially later on in the game. And we also need 3 pacers to take advantage of grass on the first two days (if Ind is bowling first). Having Dravid in the side would definitely have made playing 5 bowlers an easy choice but considering this is a must win game, Ind will have to take that chance anyways.

If Ind goes with 5 bowlers, who would be the 6 batsmen. Ofc 5 of them select themselves, i.e. Shewag, Gambhir, Laxman, Tendulkar and Dhoni (WK) so whom would you pick for the 6th spot?

It depends up on where Laxman is batting, if he is batting at 3 (as suggested by Wright, a man of sound judgment), then lots of possibilities open up as most in the squad can bat at #5. Badri with his experience is not a bad pick, Vijay appears technically the most solid of the group and would be a good choice against SA pacers. Karthik is versatile and is coming after scoring 100s in the Duleep trophy. Raina has a case too as he adds some flamboyance to the middle order (but that may not be what Ind needs atm with likes of Sehwag and Tendulkar in the squad). If Laxman is batting at #5, Vijay is the better choice being an opener. Badri has a case too as he bats at #3 and Karthik is good against pace bowling too.

Having seen the angles, an 11 like the one below would make sense:

- Sehwag
- Gambhir
- Vijay
- Tendulkar
- Laxman
- Dhoni
- Bhajji
- Zak
- Mishy
- Ishant
- Sree

News channels reporting Dhoni reckons its a seamer. India will probably go in with 3 seamers.
We need two spinners too, imo, so I hope he plays 5 bowlers. The potential to pick 3-4 wkts by Mishy would help more (as Ind is looking to pick 20 wkts as quickly as possible) sounds better than a 30-40 by the 6th (7th if you count Dhoni as a batsman) batsman.

I think you have to go with 5 bowlers. Not only do we need to win but currently our fifth best bowler probably adds more value than our 6th best batsman. I would pick Badrinath for the fifth batsman.

Yeah, India has to attack. I'd personally have 4 seamers and use sehwag if the pitch starts to turn later on.

I have a good feeling about this match, like it will go right down to the wire.

For serious? When Ishant is rated as the second best quick, I think that would be a terrible move. Harbajhan didn't look great in the first Test, but he's still more likely than some of the quicks to take wickets.

Four quicks and Harbajhan. Sehwag becomes the 2nd spinner if needed during the second innings.

I admit my knowledge of the depth of India's bowling doesn't go that far. Are there really no talented young quicks they could debut?

Going with four fast bowlers would be the most conservative plan of all time. Because it would mean there is no chance of taking 20 wickets, and India would just be trying to take 20 minutes per over and go for a draw.

Are Indian fast bowling stocks honestly that bad?

Its what most teams would do, if playing on a seaming wicket in a mustwin game. I'd take Harbajhan over Mishra, so it seems the logical decision to me.

More conservatism. For all you know India could have a Steyn of their own, waiting to burst on the scene given the oppurtunity.
Now you're just rubbing it in. While it does seem at times that Indian selectors are blind as Bucknor, they (and we) would've had a clue on this one.
