The Wheel is Forever
If India win the series against Australia, they will leapfrog England, and depending on the margin of victory, SA as well.

India leapfrog the other nation to be #2:

  1. Australia (1518)
  2. India (1016)
  3. RSA (999)
  4. England (985)
  5. Pakistan (868)
  6. Sri Lanka (814)
  7. New Zealand (794)
  8. West Indies (482)
  9. Bangladesh (105)

Numbers 2-4 are so close that every series will change the order.

If India beat England then the gap between india and South Africa will increase as will the gap between South Africa and England.

If India beat England then the gap between india and South Africa will increase as will the gap between South Africa and England.
If India win 2-0, England will drop down to 900, SA will stay around 1000 and India will be up to 1061. If India win 1-0, the same thing will happen, but to a smaller degree. In case of 0-0 or 1-1, nothing will change as it will not have improved the status quo (England went 1-1 last time they toured India).

If on the other hand, England win either 1-0 or 2-0, they will leapfrog both SA and India to be #2, with SA #3 and India #4. As I said before, #2-#4 are really close and every series could see it change until one pulls away or falls away.

India stay ahead and widen the lead after beating England. However, if RSA beat Australia in Australia, they will move to #2 in the rankings. Australia still dominant in rankings, but they have started a minor decline and they'll fall further after the conclusion of this current series even if they win the next two Tests (since SA have already bettered their previous record in Australia). However, for the first time in recent memory, Australia's #1 ranking is actually at stake. If SA do manage to annihilate both Australia home and away (e.g, 5-1 or better), they can actually overtake Australia.

This is obviously unlikely, but it is significant in that it is the first time in many years that another team even has the potential to dislodge Australia after playing them home and way. Before, Australia's rating was so far above the pack that even a whitewash home and away by any one team would not have displaced them from the #1 spot.

Meanwhile, England have decided that South Africa is no longer worthy of its own country and hence take their place in the world rankings in addition to their own.

Incidentally, the ranking system which inspired this Pickup creation (which wouldn't have been needed, nor would David Kendix's version, if people had just had a bit of patience with it) currently reads:
Code:
---------	Australia	England India New Zealand	Pakistan	South Africa	Sri Lanka	West Indies
	Australia	--------------	5-0 (5)2006/07	2-1 (3)2007/08	2-0 (2)2008/09	3-0 (3)2004/05	2-0 (3)2005/06	2-0 (2)2007/08	3-0 (3)2005/06
	England 2-1 (5)2005	--------------	0-1 (3)2007	2-0 (3)2008	2-0 (3)2006	1-2 (4)2008	1-1 (3)2006	3-0 (4)2007
	India 2-0 (4)2008/09	1-0 (2)2008/09	--------------	0-0 (2)2003/04	1-0 (3)2007/08	1-1 (3)2007/08	2-0 (3)2005/06	2-0 (3)2002/03

Believe it or not there's no way to predict that. The only way to know will be to wait and see what happens.

The Wheel is Forever
  1. Australia - 1399
  2. South Africa - 1160
  3. India - 1117
  4. England - 912
  5. Pakistan - 834
  6. Sri Lanka - 825
  7. New Zealand - 717
  8. West Indies - 572
  9. Bangladesh - 56

Australia continue to decline. SA move up to #2 after beating Australia in Australia and improving their record at home vs. them (they lost 3-0 at home last time). India improve too, but not as much as SA and lose their second place. West Indies improve and England pretty much only have their Ashes from 2005 and their series in SA holding them aloft.

Possible to do an update? It's been like 9 months since this has been updated. I wanna see whether Australia still have #1 unlike the ICC table.

I'd do it, but for 3 problems....

1. I am not 100% sure what the formula's which work out the weighting of the opposition.
2. I don't have the spreadsheet.
and 3. Silentstriker might not want anyone else to do it.

I stopped doing it as no one seemed to care all that much. I'd be fine with restarting if there is a renewed interest in it.

I think you should give it a shot with an updated version as a new thread. I am sure there will be reactions :) Ppl perhaps look at the thread start date and think it is an old one or something.. Or by reading the first post...

I did something similar to this for my own amusement not long ago and never posted it. I think I told Marcuss about it and that's as far as it got. :p

Given the CW Test Rankings are pretty much MIA these days, I've thought of an alternative (not using Neil Pickup's formula, so don't sue me boss!) :p

Home Away Overall
Australia 860 1534 1197
South Africa 762 1148 955
India 849 984 917
England 763 685 724
Sri Lanka 875 561 718
New Zealand 528 634 581
Pakistan 542 550 546
West Indies 400 474 437
Bangladesh 0 134 67

Things we can see....

* Australia still is the best side in the world
* Bangladesh still can't win for crap
* Pakistan are massively struggling
* New Zealand are having a nice boost due to series left from 6 years ago.
* Sri Lanka can't win away from home.
* South Africa's not as good due to giving up 'dead' tests to the opposition.
