***Official New Zealand Domestic Season Thread 2009/10

Went to watch the Wellington v CD match last night - first live game I've seen in NZ in ages.

Weather was fairly attrocious though at least it didn't rain enough to stop play. The end of the match was farcical - I had no idea what was going on seeing as usually bad light is at the batsmen's discretion. Only later read that the umpires decided to bring the players off 'for safety'. Stupid - it didn't seem much darker than it had all day.

Was amusing seeing domestic stalwarts Parlane and Ingram smashing the ball everywhere. Can't say any of the CD bowlers looked particularly impressive, though from where I was sitting it was hard to tell how good a line each bowler was bowling. Was surprised Noema-Barnett only bowled two overs seeing as he had the best figures and seemed to be varying his bowling quite a bit. Even though Merchant scored quite a few I didn't think he looked that great (was first time I'd seen him) - foot movement a bit slow and it seemed like a srcappy innings. Was once again reminded how much I like Jimmy F's batting though.

Wellington seemed about 10 times more alert in the field than CD and that Merchant catch to get rid of Jamie How was incredible. Franklin bowled two excellent overs before Ingram had his eye in - I was really happy to see him bowling well again. Then his third over was a bunch of half volleys and a full toss that Ingram took for 23! Garbage! McKay bowled decently and seemed to have knack for getting the ball to skid through even though he's quite tall.

All in all was good to see the match, just disappointing it finished in the way it did.

Arnel and Southee bowling very nicely indeed against Wellington at the moment - great to see they're in good form. I think Southee's action has changed slightly since last time I saw it, for the better too.

Is this the worst ever start to a 20/20 innings?

Six overs for 18 runs and five wickets down, I've never seen anything that bad.

Houghton played well. Bowled pretty well (better than Jeets), should have had a wicket only for Nevin to miss the stumping and then batted with maturity with Doowayne Bowden to avoid complete failure. Really shows how stupid it was for Wellington to give Robbie Schaw a contract.

I remember reading somewhere that Houghton missed out on a Wellington contract this season because the selectors had deemed him a 20/20 specialist.
Nice the way the draw has turned out too, with two semi-finals on Tuesday lets hope the weather holds up

Whereas Schaw is a nothing specialist, it seems.

He's not bowling as well as he was a couple of years back. He got a couple of wickets with poor deliveries and his incarnation for Wellington seems very adept at bowling a '4 ball' every over. Needs to work on his consistancy a bit more.
Seems the NZ selectors see it a bit differently, given they just picked him for the ODI squad against Bangladesh.

Hmmm... Just shows the lack of decent options available at the moment. Anyway, I'm not saying he's bad, but he does bowl some loose stuff in with the good and he was playing better a couple of years back with Auckland.

Take today's match as a case in point. The perfect yorker to dismiss McGlashan, but then bowls a head high full toss towards the end of the innings, mixed in with some common-or-garden full tosses that were despatched to the boundary.

Link? What is the squad man? He's definitely got all the tools, but as HDS said his loose stuff is his problem

I just spoke to my friend who is in one of the first class teams Smithy. It seems you are correct. Appar there are quite a few new names inc one that will make a few members on here happy...
He wouldnt tell me who they were but i do know of 2 debutants

For the record I agree he can spray can it a bit when he gets it wrong and a bit more consistency would be something he's looking for. But apart from the truly great quicks, we could say that about anyone. It's just nice to have a guy who bowls fast, puts a bit of wind up batsmen and takes wickets.

I don't have a link, just what I've heard.

Yeah I'm now a really big fan of McKay if he's supposedly declined. He looked like quite a nice bowler. Slightly expensive but aggressive and takes wickets.

Two debutants? Why am I suspicious theyve picked Williamson? :p

Quietly backing Stewart or Ingram got picked to bat number six and hit big sixxez.

What a disgrace Styris isnt there....He's Number 1 on the MVP table and is a proven matchwinner ......WTF
Lol forgot your Mark Nicholas-esque love of Styris.

Broom is very lucky though I agree. Judging by Greatbatch's comments we're building towards the 20/20 WC and ODI WC.

Yes i do...however please justify it to me then

The Guy has been THE BEST player in the HRV Cup end of story

Neil Broom was/has been nothing short of awful for NZ so far in ODIs and if Hopkins is playing as a batsman only then theyre saying that Hopkins is better than Styris.....What a joke

I agree, just quoting Greatbatch for a possible reason why he was left out.

For once I (largely) agree with you. Styris hasn't been the best player in the HRV cup, but he's been right up there and having Hopkins (and to a slightly lesser extent, Broom) in ahead of him is an atrocious pick.

Ingram deserves his shot. I'm not convinced he'll succeed, but seeing as we've tried every other ****er in the country, at least Ingram's being picked in decent form.

Yes but i want your reasons if you agree/disagree

The T20 World Cup is in 3 months time and the other is 12 months away. What part means Styris is not part of those plans? If they were two years away then thats another story
