Wait so there's no Clarke again? He can't use the reasoning that he's doing it to cement his position in the Australian team now. If anything, Australia needs him to have more experience in T20 if he's going to be captaining the naitonal side.
Notwithstanding that the guys who did well in IPL also did well at the WC last time. Experience + form = win. Clarke has neither, shouldn't be captain and, by rights, shouldn't be in the side at all.

No-one who stacks his coffin as neatly as he does should be made captain of anything.

The auction list is quite interesting, though some will be targets of bid wars, while some others may be bought out by teams quickly.

Australia- Phil Hughes and Ashley Noffke should be in contention, from the current set. Noffke's useful, and impressed in his first season with the Royal Challengers. Will he get a second dig with them?

England- Morgan and Swann are obvious choices, though the rest of the players in the fray are hardly impressive.

Pakistan- With their team being the reigning World T20 Champion, they should be in demand. The most sought-after players will be Afridi, Razzaq, Imran Nazir, Umar Gul and Royals lynchpin Tanvir. Youngsters Aamer and Umar Akmal should have a chance, but franchises should steer clear of Kamran Akmal.

South Africa- Tyron was picked up by the Royals last year but was inexplicably benched for most of the season. I wonder where he'll go, but it's surprising that Rajasthan have just let go of him, without renewing his contract. JJ will come cheap, but may not last the whole season- most teams wouldn't have a vacancy.

Sri Lanka- Difficult to find one- most Lankans don't have a very great strike rate. Nuwan Zoysa, by a long shot, would be useful, but there are other more useful options to choose. Weeraratne's a hard striker of the ball, but doesn't take many wickets, for an all-rounder.

West Indies- Many of the West Indians may just be the value-for-money picks for franchise owners. So the idea is to get them while they're still cheap.

New Zealand- Shane Bond will be the star attraction. Lou Vincent and Nathan McCullum will also be good for the teams who pick them. Vincent has two centuries, while McCullum is quite a productive T20 all-rounder. The absence of Aaron Redmond and Brendon Diamanti is a bit of a surprise.

I have it on good authority that both Clarke and Ponting are indifferent when it comes to T20 cricket.

Yep, well aware. All the more reason he shouldn't be skippering the side.
Exactly. I think it has a lot to do with the whole hierarchy thing - the selectors feel that someone like White hasn't earned the right to captain AUstralia. Whereas Pup, who has been in the system for years and who has done his time as Punter's deputy, has.

So yeah, hierarchy trumps ability and suitability.

Anyway...back on topic.

How many sides actually have places left on their rosters?

Chennai I think have one spot with Flintoff missing this season.

Whats the situation with Glenn McGrath? The papers today suggested that his contract has been brought out and that Delhi might go all out for Bond to partner Nehra at the top. Kolkata might be interested in him too, to partner Ishant and replace Shoaib Akhtar.

AFAIK, Delhi brought out his contract, and he hasn't applied for the auction - which may mean it's the end of his playing days.... :(

Kamran as a keeper, no way......i am sure the franchises are smart enough not to make the mistake that Pakistan has made for the last decade.

But i must give it to Akmal for his opening performances in T20s. Especially on Indian pitches, he could be a very good buy.

Tomorrow will be fairly uneventful I think. Each team can only field 4 overseas players from their 10, so at least a couple will see no or next to no cricket in the IPL. People are going on about Shakib, Tyron Henderson (dire player, would stand no chance at a higher level), Haddin, Bollinger, van der Wath etc. They might be cheap and good players, but will still be a waste of money. I guess you could see Shakib, Parnell or Aamer as a future investment, but that's it. The only players I'd really consider starting as regulars are Afridi, Gul, Parnell, Bond and Pollard. Possibly Umar Akmal.

Auction starts at 3pm Indian time?, which probably means 8:30pm Australian time.

Who do you think will get a contract? The interesting thing is that Mohammad Kaif is on the list, apparently because he is capped, and Rajasthan have brought out his contract.

My bets for IPL contracts...Afridi, Haddin (although most clubs probably already have a keeper), Swann, Pollard, Tanvir, Bond, Kaif, Shakib, Razzaq, Parnell, Aamer, Gul, Henderson, van der Wath. And even this list may be incorrect.

Doubt anyone will take him, but ten Doeschate is only $20k (bargain for my life)....

Wow. Afridi doesn't pick up a bid (which is an utter farce IMO), and everyone wants Pollard. ITSTL.....

No doubt Pollard is great at the this format... but why does no-one want Afridi? His bowling alone is class in 20/20s.

I agree. It is interesting to note that RRs have not bidded for Pollard. So I guess they might want to snap Afridi up. Further there is also this unwanted perception about Afridi that he is an egoist fellow. Remember how he went in the media with scathing comments against his then captain Laxman two years back.
