Well, here are my picks. In the case of Tests, many of these players probably would've had distinguished careers playing for other countries, were just unlucky with the pitch or with selectors, or they only played a little. Nevertheless:
TESTS:
- GS Blewett (was in horrible form by the time 2000 came around)
- CJL Rogers (only played one Test, but looked thoroughly uncomfortable)
- MTG Elliott (only played one Test on a minefield, but flopped spectacularly)
- ML Love (was unlucky not to play more, but didn't do quite as well as he could've when he did)
- A Symonds (yes, he's the worst batsman I found who actually batted here)
- AB McDonald (too high for a batsman of his 'skill')
- GA Manou (skillful keeper, but not Test class)
- CL White (mind, he was picked as a
spinner in India)
- BA Williams (mishandled somewhat, but his FC record wasn't all that)
- SW Tait (possessed little beyond extreme pace, reverse swing and the ability to bow the odd jaffa + wasn't much as a fielder or batsman)
- BE McGain (not the worst FC record, but his Test debut was one for the ages)
12th man: NW Bracken (for conditions where two 'spinners' aren't required)
The likes of Dan Cullen, Jason Krejza and Beau Casson had crappier FC records than McGrain, but did not perform nearly as badly when they actually played at the highest level.
ODI's:
- R Campbell (had the worst domestic record out of all the prospective openers)
- DA Warner (averaged an incredible
15!
)
- IJ Harvey (yes, he batted here!)
- DJ Hussey (distinctly poor at ODI level)
- JP Maher (ditto)
- MC Henriques (yes, he batted here - also picked for his 'bowling')
- GA Manou (not ODI class, either)
- DJ Cullen (offered little with the ball when tried)
- BW Hilfenhaus (his ODI outings have been rather bad)
- ML Lewis (a given)
- BR Dorey (picked for the wrong format and looked quite dire)
12th man: M Cosgrove (a fun sight to watch - this big blob streaming across the field)
Some others were worth considering, but their selections actually made some kind of sense (Laughlin), didn't play for long enough (Geeves) or didn't have bad domestic records (Jaques).
