Say what you want about Hughes' technique, he has an incredible temperament for a guy his age. There are other talented young batsmen around in tests right now, like Akmal and Barath, but Hughes is the only one I can picture batting for an hour and a half, struggling and only making 10 and still not playing any stupid shots.

Hopefully it'll pay off after lunch. First hour was some excellent batting under the circumstances.

all this talk about about hughes being less than impressive because he's off side dominant is crap too. You don't need shots all round the wicket to be successful. Moyo, for example. All he needs is a way to rotate the strike through the leg and he's fine. Dunno what game those who reckon aus didn't bowl well yesterday were watching either.

Faisal Iqbal.
He's not 21.

Really, I was just very impressed that Hughes was having such a tough time out there and didn't do anything rash. There's a lot of deliveries he would have been tempted to smash through the off side but he played everything on its merits, which is usually a skill batsmen learn later on in their careers.

He'll probably go and get caught behind trying to cut something over leg stump first ball after lunch now, but it was still a good effort.

No you don't, but you need to be able to at least pick up singles regulary when somebody's bowling at you're body. I've seen 4-5 innings now from Hughes, and he's just never looked good. He goes from looking like a number nine when the balls bowled at his body to some Sehwag like clone when the balls bowled out-side off.

Bottom line, he's loose and IMO doesn't look like a opening batsmen at this stage of his career. Of course I've only seen five or so test innings and somebody who's actually watched him play FC cricket and wtached him in South Africa might have a different view.

Agree. Australia bowled really well. Siddle bowled much better than his figures show. Bollinger bowled very well to bring Pakistan down from a stage where Pakistan could have taken the game away. People dont realize that Yousuf and Akmal could have got big hundreds yesterday and Pakistan could have been 331/5 at stumps.
Australian were brought back into this game by their new ball bowlers.
