*Official* England in South Africa

Neither Lee nor Akhtar have been able to clock 100mph anywhere else in the world outside South Africa, except for that time Lee did it in New Zealand. Hmm.

Apart from not making any sense, it's not true,
By stating Lee only did if in NZ 05, was to highlight a freak occurance. Generally he has always been 95 mph to 96 mph at best in most nations outside SA. Which pretty much proves my point.

because UIMM Lee famously never managed to crack 100mph.
Lee did it 2 times i remember well:

The Sri Lanka innings had started brightly enough with the inform Marvan Atapattu (14) stroking three boundaries but Lee was cranking steadily up through the gears. The disappointment of a spilled catch at cover pushed him to full throttle and a thunderbolt yorker, clocked at a staggering 160.1 KM per hour, rearranged his stumps.
vs NZ 05 as the other poster showed

I saw these two gmaes live & it showed 100 on the gun. I aint no maths man, so i dunno maybe they are/where slightly off. Plus in SA 2002, he clocked 157.4.

Overall Lee never got close to those speeds anywhere in the world except in SA, at best he would hit is 95 -96 mph with MAYBE a ball somewhere around 97.

Nah, Lee has never timed at 100mph or over. He has timed at 99.9mph, I remember distinctly, but there would have been a media hoohah if he had timed over 100mph without a speed gun error.

Ha word. There was a bit of media hoohah after the ball he bowled in NZ though. But yea as Uppercut pointed out, they probably got it wrong..

Nearly fell off my chair when I saw Bell had passed 50, and gutted that Colly never got a ton (especially as after only a few afternoon pints I had decided I wanted to sing Aerosmith's Janie's Got a Gun but change the words to Colly's Got a Ton, oh well, maybe next time) but really pleased with how this match is going. I saw the second half of the morning and the whole afternoon session and we looked so comfortable, Cook & Colly was a great partnership, might not have been box office stuff but it was just what we needed. If we bat through the morning session tomorrow, which we should, then I think we have enough in us for the win.

160.8 kph = 99.9164877 mph. Which is under 100mph.

Whoever wrote that article obviously did not get the memo.
Going to 7 SF's is just ****. :p

As for the speedgun debate, it's pointless because Lee has pushed the gun many times towards 160Km/h (have seen him top 158Km/h a few times and 155+ many times) in OZ and there ain't a heck of a lot of difference between that and 161Km/h. And, tbh, the raw speed often isn't the big factor; Lee in that series in NZ bowled fast, yes, but no quicker than he's bowled before and the NZ batters looked terrified to face him. The bounce, carry and seam movement + speed was scary to watch, let alone face.

Even then, Tait was clocked as faster than anything Lee sent down in Melbourne a few years ago. If the 'speeds in SA are faster' theory is true, Tait would go past 165Km/h.

Am I a bad person for actually laughiing at the Sky adverts with the cooking? I think I might be.

Delighted to see Cook and Bell scoring some runs. They're perennial whipping boys on CW and are frankly better than that.

We will have some crap posted about Bell only scoring when the pressure is off. I cbf checking through the thread to see who's posted it, but I know it will have been written. The reality is that even if he came to the crease at 900-4, Bell was going to be batting under real pressure in this Test. Just as he was at the Oval this summer, when (lest we forget) he contributed substantially to England winning the Ashes.

In other news, am I alone in wondering whether SA tend to underperform slightly against England? On paper, SA are a far superior team, and have been for years, yet the teams are usually pretty hard to separate on the pitch.

No z, it's just that we are awesome.

When we win this series I think the world will have to accept us as the best team tbh. It's only fair.

They do.

Virtually the entire ODI batting lineup, with the exception of Smith, have poor to average records against England, Kallis' Test record in England is poor, as is Steyn's Test record.

Surprise surprise, Cook fails to go on and make a big hundred. Good innings all the same though. Belly in now, pleaseeee score some runs!
&
Cook out shortly after the 100 shocker.

One of those batsmen that if you fast forwarded to him on 50* or 100* he'd average less runs from that point than he does from 0*.
Are we getting picky on Cook for scoring 118 runs?

Get real! That was a very good innings. The ball that got him did move from the seam and was imho a very dificult one to play.

Morning all. Building a nice lead here.

Come on Ian Bell. This is exactly what you want from your number six.
