*Official* England in South Africa

And what a surprise! - he's been pox for months now. Nobody so blind as those that can't see. Smith and the selectors are clueless.
He did take 10 wickets in the 3 Tests against Australia in South Africa, but overall, his recent form has been poor. With De Wet's haul in the last game, Ntini's place will be determined by his performance in this game, I reckon.

Tbf to Smith the bowling he faced first up yesterday was of a much higher class.
I agree with that. It also makes a lie to the fact that most people pre-series rated SA's attack as better. It struggled against Australia at home and nothing has changed. It's definitely overrated.

That was a very bowler-friendly series, especially in Joburg and Durban. Compare his haul to how Johnson for eg. fared.

Surprised England have moved ahead of SA in the odds since the end of yesterday, doesn't feel like England have had the better of today's play.

Maybe in the context of the match they have though. The pitch has flattened out and SA's total is now looking very modest, as modest as the attack the Proteas has fielded here.

Incidentally, what's the record for the lowest score by an opener when his partner has made a 50? Cook's 8 must be up/down there?
I seem to remember a Langer onslaught against England in Australia where Langer was on something like 58 and Hayden on 1 or 2. I'll try and look this up.

Might be worth checking Sehwag and Chopra too.

Might be worth looking at some of Chris Gayle's innings. Didn't he produce a particularly thunderous effort against Aus a few weeks ago?

this is interesting, everyone thinks Strauss has got a stinking decision, which could be proved totally correct by the referral system..

Don't know how the 3rd ump could over rule that decision on an inside edge, didn't see an obvious deviation myself.

BoyBrumby I found the game where Langer dominated.
End of over 10 (6 runs) Australia 55/0
ML Hayden 1* (14b) SE Bond 0.5-0-5-0
JL Langer 50* (49b 10x4) CL Cairns 5-1-20-0

Check out the commentary in this game

Good knowledge. Of all the opening pairs I'd never have guessed it'd be those two, especially with Langer as the hare.

Think Strauss might've got away with one on the referral too; couldn't say hand on heart I saw an edge. A noise, yes, but enough doubt to overrule? Not IMHO.

Nah, 300 would've been acceptable

343 is excellent
I'm not sure really. The pitch isn't dead but it's hardly a minefield. Slow outfield I suppose. But if you win the toss and bat you'd rarely be thrilled with 343. I suppose we'll have a better perspective after England have batted.

Can someone clear this up for me as I'm confused... on umpire reviews can you use hotspot or snicko?

Neither am I and I hope CSA get a backlash after being exposed over an Ntitni scandal. I just hope that Smith doesn't lose captaincy if we beat them as it's hardly fair for the captain to take the blame for politics.

Is SA's attack as poor as Pakistan's? We've witnessed two fairly ordinary attacks in operation over the past two days.

Yeah it was a crazy start to the match, Langer was just ultra aggressive and hogged the strike!

SA would have settled for 343 at close of play last night. Or even at 285 for 9. Admittedly I haven't followed any of the game before tea, but it looks like we let them off the hook here.

And now Strauss has gone, which doesn't help either. The number of times he doesn't get going at all after a break in an innings when he's been creaming it all over the place,
