Thing is, Gambhir didn't even need to do anything. He was already owning Watson, Mitch, Katich etc. by hitting his double ton (including smashing Watson for six to get to his century... must have been so satisfying) and the sledging seemed to spur him on and just make him play better. Didn't need to elbow Watson.

Not talking solely about this specific instance, but rather the disparity between how a comment labelling a team as 'whingers' who are 'soft' would be received if it were made by say, Ricky Ponting, as opposed to Chris Gayle. Would Ricky, or an apologist on his behalf, saying that such comments were 'tongue in cheek' hold any water.

As I said, I've no problem with Gayle wanting to debate the issue through the media - I think Watson was clearly the guy who overreacted on the field and made the issue into a drama. But don't insult us all by saying that he's just kidding, and then think he can still have the reputation of someone who never gets down and dirty in the sledging stakes - it pissed him off so he's publicly calling Watson et al on it.
