The mentioned 'mess ups' would make them the better side surely?

Admittedly it was huge fun to do that to Argentina in 2002.

Not really. Technicall we won the EURO 04 QF in regulation 90 minutes 2-1. Since Campbell scored.

Plus on paper we where better than them in 06 again. We just did crap.

On paper doesn't mean anything though, if it did we'd just hand Brazil the WC everytime.

End of the day, Portugal went through both times so they were the better team.

Haha, I must admit i chuckle everytime aussie trots out the "on paper" line. Have 2 mates who're quite proud of their cars. On paper, one should always beat the other in a quarter mile race, on bitumen though, it never happens.

Will be interesting to see which teams do best when they eventually play on this paper field though. If aussie is to be believed, France would be unstoppable

Not in 2002 nor next year. Spain on paper (and performances) would be the best team next year.

So then because Greece won EURO 2004, i guess they clearly was the best team in Europe then?. Clearly not.

Superior teams can lose to inferior team in sports, if the superior team doesn't play to potential. ENG where superior to Portugal in our last two encounters.

Greece in June/July 2004 were the best team going, otherwise they wouldn't have won.

England obviously weren't superior because on paper after the game they lost/were knocked out. You can't lose and claim you were the superior team because it's pretty clear that you just weren't otherwse you'd have won.

No it was a fluke. Same Greece team could't even qualify for WC 06.

To use a cricket example. Thats like saying because IND won the 1983 WC they were the best team in world then.

Yes you can. As i said superior teams can play poorly & lose to inferior teams in sports. But that doesn't mean that the inferior team is better.

It's called form and playing to your potential. The Greek team played out of their skins to win in 2004, but because they did they were the best team.

England all to often seem like they can't be bothered, especially against minnows or go into games with the attitude that because they're playing for England they will win. So on paper they may look a good team, but with a prima donna attitude, they flatter to decieve at tournaments and even qualifying and get nowhere near their potential.
For a top team with a completely different attitude, Germany is the best example. They always seem to breeze through qualis and at major tournaments, even with supposedly weaker sides they still make the QFs without fail and made the final in 2002 with one of the worst German teams taken to a WC.

Australia and England actually got drawn together in the rehearsal yesterday, along with Cameroon and Slovakia.

Would happily take that, Australia and Cameroon/Slovakia through, England 0/3, failing to net one goal while conceding 9 (7 against Aus)

There's the possibility of any absolutely dire group if South Africa get a lucky draw. They'll still crash out early on though!

Thought you wanted a free draw? Make your mind up! :p

I'll try to get a nice mix...

A: South Africa, USA, Paraguay, Switzerland (moderately decent sides to top the hosts, then bow out in the second round to group B without bothering anyone)
B: Germany, France, South Korea, Algeria (yeah, ok, easy for France, don't really want a GoD)
C: Netherlands, Mexico, Uruguay, Slovenia (want Suárez to face Netherlands)
D: England, Denmark, Australia, Nigeria (agreed that Eng-Oz should be a classic, and Denmark will get nil points, which is always good - snobbish ****s)
E: Brazil, North Korea, Ghana, Portugal (Brazil-Portugal should be good...had to put someone decent here, unlucky for Ghana)
F: Italy, Japan, Chile, Greece (mainly chosen so Greece could get easy opposition...purely a personal perspective here, not much for the neutral)
G: Spain, Honduras, Cameroon, Slovakia (a nice and easy group for Spain & Cameroon)
H: Argentina, New Zealand, Ivory Coast, Serbia (some challenge for Argentina...well, should be, though they did beat Serbia 6-0 last time)

Not sure who I'll cheer for in the tournament, probably Greece (have friends there) or Germany (though they have painfully obvious weaknesses). Or Cameroon, most likeable of the African squads.
