Put it this way- if they were playing Juventus at home in Serie A, and they won, you wouldn't bat an eyelid. It would be like Arsenal beating Chelsea at home.
Nup. Maybe ten years ago but not now. (Not much of a local derby either, so I'd say Aston Villa beating Chelsea at home is a better analogy...which the Beeb probably would agree is not a shock.)

Berbatov - class act
Everyone else - bit stale
Thought Berba was sublime in the first half but generally ineffectual (though still very pretty to watch) in the second. Giggs and Carrick were excellent in the second half and Anderson did almost enough good stuff to forgive his first touch. And shooting. And inability to measure a pass.

Impressed by Wolfsburg though, absolute beast of a forward partnership and always looking to attack. Will be amazed if they don't go through to the last 16 from this group.

BARNES OUT
They're still better than a lot of people give them credit for tbh, whilst it was perhaps somewhat surprising that they beat Liverpool I would never say it was a "shock".
They've won 1 of their last 12 games in Europe and lost their last 5 home games in European competition.

It's a shock.

The people I was watching with all thought Anderson played awesome, tbh. Can't say I've ever noticed anything wrong with his first touch, but I'll look out for that. His shooting's a joke though.

Berbatov we were a lot less impressed with, wasted some good positions. I'm not losing patience with him yet, he'll improve, but he's not quite there at the moment IMO.

Ha ha yeah, possibly a bit harsh on Ando's first touch - I was actually thinking of one particular occasion where he was through on goal (though he probably would have missed anyway). He's such a dynamic player and was involved in so much last night, it frustrated the hell out of me when he'd do everything right and then overhit his final pass or, worse still, shoot. I'm still firmly in the pro-Anderson camp, and he's showing some excellent form this season. With Carrick finding some confidence last night and Hargreaves back in full training within days, things are looking up for the midfield.

Haha, he only took a heavy touch because he had a chance to score. Turns into a clown when that happens.

I think Anderson-Fletcher's our best CM pairing. Both full of energy and good on the ball, they can be a lot more dominant than a lot of our CM pairings have been over the past few years. I'm not a big fan of Carrick, but he's great backup/rotation for those two and Hargreaves.

Loony BoB

International Captain
Have to say I was pretty damned pleased with him last night, made some excellent cross field / long range passes that found their mark much more often than not. One of the passes which lead to Rooney vs. a single defender was Scholes-esque.

Personally would find it very difficult to find a preferred pairing out of any of Fletcher, Giggs, Carrick and Anderson lately. All in form!

Walcott vs J Cole

Now that the two big boys are back for the upcoming WCQ, who should start on the right for ENG?

Aaron Lennon.
Lennon although he proved he was international quality the other day. Once all are fit & in top form Walcott/ J Cole generally should be fighting for start on the right - Lennon remains a quality back-up option.

Cole should be on the left - move Gerrard back where he ends up drifting to and leave Fat Frank as a sub.

But Fabio has got the mid-field formula is working so well. No need to change it.

I personally would start Cole as part of a 4-3-3 formationt with Rooney in the centre & Theo on the right. But of course Capello aint gonna let Rooney play alone up front.

Incidentally, as of today Arsene Wenger celebrates 13 years and one day in charge of Arsenal, making him the Gunners' longest serving boss ever.

Congratulations to the man, a credit to the club and to the game, one of the all time greats.
