Semi Finals (Day 6) - Shanghai (China) - Indoor Hard

Men's singles (Finals - Seeds - Section 1 - Section 2 - Section 3 - Section 4)
Men's doubles (Finals - Top Half - Bottom Half)
  • World No. 3 Radek Špidlá has arrested his poor record against Jason Hall in big events by taking a straight sets victory in a hotly anticipated semifinal in Shanghai. Špidlá had previously suffered losses at the Australian Open, CW Open and Canada Masters, but finally got back at Hall in a fierce encounter on Centre Court. The world No. 1 had started slowly in most of his matches this week, and it was no different here as the aggressive Špidlá came out of the blocks with some typically big serving and penetrating ground strokes. Hall meanwhile looked less confident on service, and paid for it as Špidlá took a break of service in the sixth game and went on to take the first set 6-3. The world No. 1 lifted his game in the second, though, and managed to shoot ahead 4-1 with a break of service. But Špidlá clawed back and sent the set to a tiebreaker; proving too strong and getting too many free points on serve to advance 6-3, 7-6(3).
  • It was a near identical scoreline in the second semifinal as unpredictable and underachieving Serb Danijel Micic advanced to the biggest match of his ATP career with a 6-3, 7-6(2) win over France's Patrick Pascaul. Micic seems to finally be showing his undoubted talent against some of the world's best players, and sealed a spot inside the world's top 20 with some attractive tennis comprised of awesome shots off both sides. Pascaul has picked up some big victories this week, but failed to really get going against Micic who broke just one racquet on his way to the Shanghai Masters final.

  • Seeded players out:
    Jason Hall.
  • It was a let down for unseeded pair Rob Bowenburg& Jarkko Maxum in the semifinals of the doubles draw as they were roundly thrashed by top seeds Hugh James & Ralph Robinson. After upsetting the third seeds, the CWLanders turned their sights to the world's best pairing but found themselves outmatched by the American combination who gave up little space in dominating at the net and baseline. Robinson fired down nine aces on his serve whilst James also picked off four as Bowenburg and Maxum struggled to make any inroads to the top seeds' serve. The unseeded duo, meanwhile, failed to achieve consistency on their serve and gave up too many opportunities as James and Robinson advanced to the final 6-2, 6-4.
  • Their opponents will be Andrej Konc & Evgeniy Maximov after the sixth seeds took a Super Tiebreaker win over Mark Harmel & Yves Parmentier. In an odd match, it seemed just one side was interested in the first set whilst the other was the only duo switched on in the second as they traded 6-2 sets. In the deciding breaker, Konc and Maximov got a 4-0 jump and never looked back as they advanced to their second Masters Series final 6-2, 2-6, 10-6.

  • Seeded players out: None.

  • Scotland Rivers has given up a one-set lead to bomb out in the semifinals of the Challenger in Heilbronn to Belarusian Denis Isaev. Rivers started the match brilliantly to take the first set 6-2 with some authoritative tennis, but quickly lost confidence as Isaev stole a break of service in the first game of the second set. Try as Rivers might, he was unable to get his first set form back as Isaev cut down on his striking ability with some deep hitting that pushed Rivers back behind the baseline. Still showing his inexperience on clay, Rivers struggled to counter the tactic and wilted to a 2-6, 6-3, 6-0 defeat.
  • The bad day for CWLand was compounded as Matt Bre was smashed in the first semi final by Argentina's Miguel Bertolotto. Bertolotto hadn't lost a set in Heilbronn, and was keen to avoid a similar result to his last semi final in Bangkok where he lost to champion Rick Henson 6-0, 6-3. And avoid it he did as he dominated the match from start to finish; showing up Bre's inability to strike winners as he controlled rallies en route to a 6-2, 6-0 win.

  • Seeded players out:
    Scotland Rivers.
  • Denis Isaev will pull double finals duty on Sunday after he and Marcus Heindrich advanced with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Gurpreet Rao & Suryakant Singh. Singh and Rao lost their third straight first set, and never rebounded as the Belarusian-German pairing improved in the second set to seal a straight sets win. They will face top seeds Dênis Rodrigues & Roberto Santos in the final.

  • Seeded players out:
    Dusko Milošević &
    Savo Petkoviä.

  • World No. 3 Radek Špidlá has moved in sight of the world No. 2 position after claiming his second Masters title with a straight sets win over Serbia's Danijel Micic. Many expected the fiery Serb to come out and take his first major title; but in comparison to the energetic Micic that appeared in matches against Pascaul and Blanco, the Serbian No. 2 looked comparatively subdued. The lack of energy played against him as he was broken in the first game by Špidlá who proceeded to cancel out any chance of Micic getting back into the set with nine first set aces. Micic was becoming visibly frustrated at his inability to get anything on the Czech giant's serve, and after dropping serve again early in the second he broke his first racquet. From then he managed to bring up one break point chance on Špidlá's serve, but couldn't convert as the third seed clinched the title with his nineteenth ace of the match.

  • Top seeded pair Hugh James & Ralph Robinson have claimed their first Masters Series title to go with their French Open title after taking a hard-fought three set win over sixth seeds Andrej Konc & Evgeniy Maximov. The Slovak-Belarusian pair looked done at a set and a break down in the second set, but fought back brilliantly to send the match to a Super Tiebreaker to decide the championship. But the well-oiled American pair got the jump on their opponents and survived a late fightback to hand Konc and Maximov their second Masters final loss 7-5, 4-6, 11-9.

  • Belarusian third seed Denis Isaev has claimed the Challenger title in Heilbronn with a 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 victory over Argentina's Miguel Bertolotto. Isaev, in his second final of the day, showed no signs of fatigue as he took the opening set before the impressive Bertolotto struck back to level the match at a set each. But in the decider, Isaev got the early start to go a double break up and eased towards the finish line to secure a win.

  • Seeded players out: None.
  • Top seeded doubles pair Dênis Rodrigues & Roberto Santos proved too good in the doubles final for Denis Isaev & Marcus Heindrich to claim their maiden title as a pairing. It looked like it might be a walkover as the Brazilian duo raced through the first set in just 26 minutes and went up a break in the opening game of the second set. However, the Belarusian-German pair broke back immediately and, after taking the second set, looked in prime position to steal the title. That never eventuated, though, as Rodrigues and Santos blitzed them in the Super Tiebreaker to secure a 6-1, 3-6, 10-5 win.

Kremlin Cup I - Main Draw

Drake will come in as the favourite to take the title, but starts with a tricky match against world No. 85 Zbiginiew Boniek. Bradley is not a bad quarterfinal opponent, whilst Benaglio has been in awful form for a long while to make this a fairly easy half for the top seed.

The bottom half, however, is much tougher and it is hard to pick a finalist from here. Zoltán Varga hasn't really kicked on since Wimbledon despite a promising performance in Shanghai, and could find trouble against local boy Dmitry Orlov in the quarters. Meanwhile, Becker Haas and Jamee Hancianu have featured in tournament finals this year, but find stiff competition in the form of Parmentier, Gryzlov and Vollan.

Korpinen earned his spot in the main draw with qualifying wins over Marc Lubbers (6-4, 6-3), Tino Boytchuk (7-6(2), 7-5) and sixth seed Oliver Thursfield (7-5, 6-4). A difficult first round clash for him against Gregor Gorshkov, but probably one of the better seeded players in Bradley in the second round if he gets that far.

If Stockholm Open - Main Draw

Vastly underpowered draw in Stockholm with a lot of clay courters appearing. Oxenstierna should be able to bounce back from his second round exit in Shanghai by making at the least the semifinals here with the winner of Hurtado/Vollan providing stiff opposition. Oneil Stewart makes a return to action for the first time since his final in Nixonstown, and could face CWLand's Spas Delev in the second round. Delev has a tricky first round clash with the always improving Marc Carretero who has been earmarked as the next big thing in Spanish tennis.

Randy Banks made it through qualifying with wins over Nicolas Ljunjberg (6-2, 7-6(2)), fourth seed Ivan Vuka (4-6, 7-6(5), 6-2) and Italy's Andrea Ciano (6-0, 6-2). A gentle first round clash against Massimo Prodi gives him a real chance to improve his ranking, but Tiago Matías awaits in the second round after last week defeating Juan Moreno. Banks' best chance of a quarterfinal is if José Navarro of Peru upsets the Portuguese third seed.

No shame in losing doubles to the worlds best pairing, only a matter of time before lob and maxum hold that mantle.

Hoping I can secure a top 16 spot by the time the Australian Open comes around, need to pull off an upset or two in these sort of tournaments for that to happen.
