The sad fact is we aren't competing on an even playing field; the fact it isn't level is actually in our favour more often than not, but there are teams on higher financial ground than us. We can't realisitically match Chelsea, Citeh or ManUre in the transfer market. The presence of newly-minted clubs like Citeh & Real distorts the market (look at the money Citeh paid for Lescott; insanity) and Wenger (admirably IMHO) refuses to risk the medium-long term future of the club for possible but uncertain short term gain.
Like I've said many times before, no-one is realistically asking for us to go out and spend 80-100m every transfer window like aforementioned clubs have done in the past.
Just the fact that a club with such mediocre players consistently playing for it that does absolutely nothing to try and improve their squad. You don't need 20 million quid players to improve on some of the dross we have there. **** me, we still havent replaced Flamini, Diarra and Gilberto and our only signing of the summer was a good centre back when we have issues with an inconsistent left back, no squad depth and no defensive midfield to speak of. This was before selling two of our most senior players to a domestic rival.
I don't see how we're putting the future of the club at risk either. Unless all those financial reports they gloat about and all the times the board members and Wenger have come out and said they could spend money if they wanted were all fabrications? All those independant reviews of football clubs placing us close to the top as far as valuable and profitable clubs are figments of my imagination as well too?
We act like we don't have a pot to piss in (wrt to the transfer market) when all relevant parties maintain that we are minted as a club. Just like fans give Arsene credit for moving us into the new stadium and how well off it's made us, if the opposite is true and we are financially screwed then surely he has to take a fair chunk of the blame for pushing the club into going down this route. A club who make tens of millions more in revenue even when taking into consideration the repayments are suddenly broke?
No matter which of the above scenarios are true the club has been mismanaged somewhere along the line whether it be on the pitch or off the pitch. Probably both. I concede asking for Arsene's head might be a bit harsh, but if we continue to slip and are overtaken by another team(or possibly 2) when we have had a heap of money sitting in the bank from sales then it'll be well justified.
Yes it's 2005 since we last won a trophy, but we still there or thereabouts and no-one in their right mind would swap a League Cup for a top four spot nowadays anyway.
Probably won't need to worry about either at the end of this season tbh. At least we can finally win the Europa League in our shiny new stadium.
