Don't agree, although I think I'm in the minority. Two group stages was unnecessary, but it was awesome to watch.
Really? Can't agree even vaguely. Two group stages made the whole thing feel bloated and increased the number of meaningless games exponentially. Only way it made sense was financially.

Bloated? Hell no. I don't think I'll ever be able to have too many European midweek football nights.

There really weren't too many meaningless games. The beauty of the second group stage was that every game was such a challenge. You could find yourself going into the last game needing a point away to Juventus, who have lost their first five games. It was seriously competitive, the most competitive structure there's ever been.

Demonstrably not the case tho; often teams qualified with two games remaining, which renders the theoretical trip to Turin meaningless to all intents. With the KO system there's always something riding on the game, even after comfortable first leg performances.

TBH, if I had my way all European ties would be knock-out, but realise the CL is such a cash-cow that isn't going to happen.

With the Platini-endorsed rejig of the draw to allow the champions of lesser countries qualify ahead of the 2nd/3rd/4th placed teams from the more affluent league we're going to see more mismatches than usual tho.

What? The very essence of European football is two-legged KO ties. I have no real interest for the group stage, the majority of games on show aren't that much higher in quality that your average Premiership game. It only really gets going once the second round comes around.

Yeah, this, the second group stage of the CL was always a bit rubbish for mine.

Heh @ Ade's comments today. Apparently, it's all Bendtner's fault that Ade's a complete ****.
