How many Australian captains have lost the Ashes twice consecutively in England? How many captains have won the Ashes 5-0? Have a world-record winning streak?
Impossible question to answer. But I don't see why not.But would he have done this well if he had not been dropped?
That's kind of my point and is a direct response to that criticism. Ponting didn't break those records by himself and neither was responsible for those losses by himself. Half his side has changed in this time where he has lost a few series and I don't think any alternative could have been materially different. How many Australian captains have lost the Ashes twice consecutively in England?
Pretty much my thoughts regarding this issue.Ian Chappell said:Ponting's done well to keep the team afloat - Chappell
"Obviously with Australia losing the series and Ponting losing the Ashes in England for the second time, there will be some queries about his captaincy, there will be some sniping about his captaincy." "Overall I thought he did a pretty fair job as a captain. And when you consider the turnover of very good players that he has had under his captaincy - no other Australian captain has had to cope with that. And I think he has done remarkably well to keep Australia afloat in a situation where they are still a team in transition."
"Now is not the right time to sack Ponting as captain." "For starters if you sack him you will probably lose your best batsman because I don't think he would want to continue if he was sacked as captain. But the most important thing is I don't believe that he deserves to be sacked as captain, he's still the best man for the job."
Hasn't stopped the INdians.Gilchrist would have been the only other option, but keeping and captaincy long term would be very difficult.
The question is, is he really the best possible guy to captain Australia? Both as a leader and as a tactician, are there better options than him available currently in the side? No, this is not his fault. You can't expect to lose what they did in terms of quality and experience and then still expect to win all the crucial moments in Test matches. That's unreasonable and just smacks of finding a scapegoat. Ponting is fine as captain, if anything, you need a steady hand who has been there through the better times there to motivate and rebuild the team.
How many captains got to inherit a side with the best bowling attack in the world by a country mile and the best batting line up in the world AND the best wicketkeeper-batsman ever ( at least in terms of stats)?????How many captains have won the Ashes 5-0? Have a world-record winning streak?
Yeah I agree, it's hard to set a field to bowlers bowling both sides of the wicket.Would be intruiged to know why exactly people think he should resign?
Thought his captaincy this series was quite good apart from the final session at cardiff. Wasn't exactly helped by bowlers serving up pies on more than 1 occassion.
Yeah he is in my opinion. The question is, is he really the best possible guy to captain Australia? Both as a leader and as a tactician, are there better options than him available currently in the side?
Could be arguable that the shelf life may differ between an Australian, and an Indian, captain, considering the amazing scrutiny one cops from the Indian media.I guess when you consider all forms of the game, he is pretty much the best of the limited lot, but lets say Katich were also in the ODI side.. Would you consider him?
There is also a bit of a fatigue factor with captaincy when you have done it for so long. Ganguly and Dravid both admitted that there is a shelf life for a captain, however good he may be...
Katich is the only one tactically but I don't think he commands enough respect .Also one or two bad series would cost him a spot as a batsmen .So no Ricky is the best for the job at the moment. The question is, is he really the best possible guy to captain Australia? Both as a leader and as a tactician, are there better options than him available currently in the side?
definitely... But then again, an Ashes losing Aussie captain cops it pretty bad, I would assume and to have gone through that twice.. Would he have enough left to get back up and say "I want to go through all this again.." ???Could be arguable that the shelf life may differ between an Australian, and an Indian, captain, considering the amazing scrutiny one cops from the Indian media.
Watto....The question is, is he really the best possible guy to captain Australia? Both as a leader and as a tactician, are there better options than him available currently in the side?
Uh, you must have missed my follow up HB.How many captains got to inherit a side with the best bowling attack in the world by a country mile and the best batting line up in the world AND the best wicketkeeper-batsman ever ( at least in terms of stats)?????
