asking ponting to give up captaincy right now is a knee-jerk reaction more asian than australian in cricketing terms. there is no one else who can take over this side and make it better. ponting should take a leaf out of allan border and keep pushing his team to come out of adversity with guns firing. if he succeeds in building a world class unit out of these youngsters, who knows, he may be remembered more fondly than just as a great batsman.

No he shouldnt. Aussie captains of late tend to lead until they retire, I dont think they'll break the trend.

Nah he is not going anyhwere, at the very least he will want to beat England again in Australia but think he might go on quite a lot longer than that.

He never should have been handed the captaincy in the first place.
So who should have got it then? Warne was clearly out of the picture in 2004 and there really was noone else putting their hand up.

Gilchrist would have been the only other option, but keeping and captaincy long term would be very difficult.

Would be intruiged to know why exactly people think he should resign?

Thought his captaincy this series was quite good apart from the final session at cardiff. Wasn't exactly helped by bowlers serving up pies on more than 1 occassion.

Yeah, that's why he wasn't a realistic option at the time. His name was bandied about but that he had the gloves meant it wasn't going to happen.

The same Clarke that only just re-established his place in the side the very same series Warne retired? ITSTL

I disagreed with Clarke being dropped back then though.

I also don't believe Warne would have retired when he did had he been captain.

No, this is not his fault. You can't expect to lose what they did in terms of quality and experience and then still expect to win all the crucial moments in Test matches. That's unreasonable and just smacks of finding a scapegoat. Ponting is fine as captain, if anything, you need a steady hand who has been there through the better times there to motivate and rebuild the team.

Not saying he should resign, but he has lost 3 of his last 5 test series. Not sure him resigning or asking him to is knee-jerk

MS Dhoni's doing all right.

One of the only good youngsters coming through for Australia at the time and I think everyone knew he would be big in the future. With the age of the Australian team at the time I thought it was a pretty stupid move to drop Clarke. It only took what, 12-18 months before he had established himself in the team again anyway?

Yes. He is the first captain in over 100 years to lose 2 ashes series. While this series is not his fault alone as captain he must take responsibility for the underperformance of the team. Statisticly Australia dominated the series but lost it 2-1.

Most people agree that he is not a brilliant captain on the field and results are really starting to show that up over the last couple of years with the big-name retirements.

As for the replacement there isn't a lot of choice. Michael Clarke would be the leading candidate as vc. He has captained in ODIs and T20s and done a reasonable job. Im not sure how many FC games he has captained, if any, but Ponting probably hadn't captained many when he took over either.

Simon Katich would be my choice, he has done a fantastic job for NSW over the last couple of years noteably a side with a lot of young players in it.

Brad Haddin is NSW vc and has captained NSW a fair bit and done a good job. Would be unlikely to be picked because he is a keeper.

Marcus North is WA captain and i have no idea what he is like, but he also doesn't have enough international experience.

Hussey has done very poorly as captain of Australia in ODI's and has been in poor form all year.

But would he have done this well if he had not been dropped?
