So who should have got it then? Warne was clearly out of the picture in 2004 and there really was noone else putting their hand up.He never should have been handed the captaincy in the first place.
Yeah, that's why he wasn't a realistic option at the time. His name was bandied about but that he had the gloves meant it wasn't going to happen.Gilchrist would have been the only other option, but keeping and captaincy long term would be very difficult.
Warne SHOULD have got it, then Clarke when Warne retired. So who should have got it then? Warne was clearly out of the picture in 2004 and there really was noone else putting their hand up.
I disagreed with Clarke being dropped back then though. The same Clarke that only just re-established his place in the side the very same series Warne retired? ITSTL
What?!I disagreed with Clarke being dropped back then though.
Not saying he should resign, but he has lost 3 of his last 5 test series. Not sure him resigning or asking him to is knee-jerkasking ponting to give up captaincy right now is a knee-jerk reaction more asian than australian in cricketing terms. there is no one else who can take over this side and make it better. ponting should take a leaf out of allan border and keep pushing his team to come out of adversity with guns firing. if he succeeds in building a world class unit out of these youngsters, who knows, he may be remembered more fondly than just as a great batsman.

MS Dhoni's doing all right.Gilchrist would have been the only other option, but keeping and captaincy long term would be very difficult.
One of the only good youngsters coming through for Australia at the time and I think everyone knew he would be big in the future. With the age of the Australian team at the time I thought it was a pretty stupid move to drop Clarke. It only took what, 12-18 months before he had established himself in the team again anyway? What?!
But would he have done this well if he had not been dropped? One of the only good youngsters coming through for Australia at the time and I think everyone knew he would be big in the future.
