We can keep focusing on North being a part-timer. Or, give him credit for BEING TEH AWESOMEZ.

(Or focus on the pitch)

There seems to be quite a bit of turn for a first day wicket. I wonder if Monty should have played instead of Harmison.

Really worried for Swann here, everytime has has been expected to perform this series he has not really delivered, now Englands hopes are all going to be put on him. Hope he does ok

He bowled on a dustbowl last week and did sweet FA. If England was going to go for a second spinner, it should have been Rashid.

Gosh Broad looks totally hopeless against the short ball, as do most of this English side in fact. So much for Gooch's legacy.

Shame England don't have a batsman who can bowl part time spin, another benefit of having Pietersen in the side.

And FTR, Harmison is crap on most surfaces.

Can't see Swann doing anything huge here. Incase people have forgotten, Australia have some quite good batsmen and they aren't going to throw their wickets away. Swann doesn't have much mystery about him.

Why, England, do you need another Flintoff? Perhaps work first on getting four bowlers who can consistently take twenty wickets, like most competitive Test Playing Nations. Not a healthy view of Test Match Cricket imo, and it's hurting you.

In case no one's noticed, Murray Goodwin has put the Taunton motorway to best use, 344* off 351 (43 4s! and 6 6's). Experienced middle order batsmen, successful at the international level, isn't he England qualified? Pretty sure his heart belongs to Rhodesia though, oops I meant Zimbabwe...

Lol he's only beaten his next best FC score by 9 runs (previous best 335*), not a bad player is that Goodwin bloke.
Nah, Kolpak. Might struggle to be retained next season with the changes in interpretation of the EU employment laws.

Cook has been rubbish for a while now but its gone completely unnoticed by almost everyone.
In the kingdom of the blind the one-eyed man is king. Our 3-4-5 for the 3rd and 4th tests are the original three blind mice.

Anyone else noticed how big a head Marcus North has, btw? Hadn't fully appreciated it when he had his helmet on batting, but it's a huge nappa. Easter Island job.

If only Samit Patel lost the weight. Better bet than most of our middle order and handy spin
