You only have to look at how dire the defence is in the Toyota Cup to see why we are conceeding so many points in first grade. We have promoted Josh McGuire, Alex Glenn, Andrew McCullough, Guy Williams plus have well known lazy defenders such as David Taylor, Ashton Sims, Ben Te'o and Lagi Setu in the middle of the field. It's no surprise we are conceeding so many tries when we have no stiffness in that middle third of the park, really only Corey Parker and Sam Thaiday can be relied upon in our forward pack.

Apologies for the multiquote...

Have been fuming over this post all week, and over the trivialisation of our slump this year. So much so, that I launched myself into some research. lol

Until this season, we have never in our proud 21 year history conceded 40 points in a game more than once in a season. By damning contrast, this year it has happened FOUR times already. Over a wretched six game span, we have conceded an average of 36.1 points per match.

Put very simply, we have lost pride in our defensive line.
You pretty much summed up what I've felt for a long time. 40 point hidings used to be extremely rare - they're fairly common now, but without us spanking anybody by that much to even things out.

Read the next line, it basically sums up why we have conceeded a lot more points than normal, our team is just worse than it ever has been.
Perhaps, but it's still a decent team. Not the sort that should be copping 40 point hidings regularly, and certainly they should be scoring a lot more freely than they do, yet even with Lockyer there there seems to be little creativity in attack.

Brisbane does have a good record of bringing younger players through
Yet they're unable to retain them. Look around the NRL for all the other clubs with ex-Brisbane players.

Yeah and again we lose the only shining light in the forwards Dave Taylor.

I couldn't comprehend the lose of Ben Hannant, he was worth so much to the club last year.
True. See above. Every year the list of departing players is way longer than the incoming one. The ex-broncos at other clubs that I can think of off the top of my head: Tate, Moon and Kemp at Auckland; Boyd, and Sailor (and Bennett) at St George; Learoyd-Lahrs at Canberra; Eastwood, Ennis and Hannant at Canterbury; Civoniceva at Penrith. Lost Barnes, Sailor and Tuqiri to the rah-rahs.

This is a quick list of former Broncos that have been running around for other clubs this season, obviously all clubs face the problem of losing players though. This list could come up with a decent side, would be the best forward pack in the game by a mile

Darius Boyd
Ben Hannant
Michael Ennis
Brad Meyers
Ashley Harrison
Tom Learoyd Lahrs
David Stagg
Greg Eastwood
Nick Emmett
Brett Seymour
Nathan Friend
Neville Costigan
Chris Walker
Joel Moon
Denan Kemp
Brent Tate
Scott Prince
Carl Webb
Wendell Sailor
Petero Civoniceva

That is a ****ing strong list as well.
That just proves the quality we have lost, theres 10 forwards on that list that have played Origin and or International footy, the backs arent bad either with a further 5 International or Origin reps.

Would bring Shaun Berrigan back from England to replace Friend and have Eastwood on the bench over Webb. Then its a premiership winning side.

Yeah couldn't believe it when I saw that. What chance does the NRL have if a second tier Japanese rugby team can casually nab one of the better players in the game today?

On another note what does everyone think of the possibility of an independent commission being instated to run the NRL.

Could only be a good thing IMO. It's a massive conflict of interest having Fox with one hand of the wheel of the NRL, so the less influence they have in the running of the game (particularly in the area of TV rights) the better.

That's not really fair - I think all us Brisbane fans understand the reality of player turnover. The point being made is about the inordinately high number of losses - especially quality ones - in combination with the low number of acquisition to compensate.

Besides, your comparison isn't a good one as that Melbourne side has retained the top players in key positions (fullback, 5/8, halfback and hooker) as well as arguably the best player in the game. Not to mention that they were still good enough to make another Grand Final the following year.

You know Melbourne are doing fine when one can ask the question "which one?" in response to that sentence (Inglis, Smith some would even stretch to Slater).

Figured you're talking about Inglis ftr.

Yeah good points. When I started doing it I actually thought that there were going to be more that had left, but I kept going anyway.

Also I think I did a diservice to Matty Geyer; looking back I'm pretty sure that he played in the GF and that Aubusson did not.

cheers

edit - note that Brisbane officials only have themselves to blame by poaching a player and making him the highest paid player in the NRL before he'd played a game in his second season.

Ok, on the topic of players leaving clubs, this is a team of Raiders players still playing the NRL, apart from Carney. Can't think of another centre though;

1. William Zillman
2. Michael Robertson
3. Colin Best
4. Aadm Mogg
5. Bronx Goodwin
6. Todd Carney
7. Brett Finch
8. Ben Cross
9. Ryan Hinchcliffe
10. Brent Kite
11. Michael Henderson
12. Neville Costigan
13. Nathan Smith

14. Michael Hodgson
15. Nick Kouparitsas
16. Todd Payten
17. Luke Priddis

Coach: Neil Henry
