Swindon won the league cup in 1969.
Bolton won the FA Cup in 1958.
To me major would be EPL (or Div 1 in old money), FA Cup and European Cup or UEFA Cup/Europa League/Cup Winners Cup/I have no idea what it used to be. Were Swindon top flight '69 as I thought it was for the teams in the lower leagues and smaller top flight teams. I could be well wrong of course.

League Cup definitely counts as major tbf, I say this because I don't ever want our only major final taken away from us

When it first started some of the top clubs did opt out, not sure how long this went on fair

Wiki says 1969 (when Swindon won) was the last season with opt-out. Manchester United were the only team to do so, though, having won the double the previous year.

Yeah, Swindon just had a very good team for a lower div side, and Don Rogers was superb. one of the great cup upsets:)

Do you pseudo-support Swindle or something?
Hardly, it's just a fairly famous cup-killing, up there with Hereford, I'd say. Arsenal being humiliated is always funny. I don't remember the match, not being alive and all, but when I was a lad (in div 3). there was always talk of "if they could do it, maybe us".

Can't imagine it nowadays, mind.....

Haha, I just remembered you drooling over their 92-93 side a couple of weeks back as well.

The Hereford giantkilling was immense, must admit I'd never heard much about the swindon one

Nah, just Shaun Taylor being a legend, if he was playing for United I'd of wanted them to win. Ling was decent for us too, I notice he's in the betting for managing your lot along with big violent Ronnie Jepson. A ginger you wouldn't mock, to be fair.

I don't get wound up about that one, I'm an Irish United fan so it means nothing to me. But if you're ever in Manchester it would be wise not to say it too loud in a bar.

Was it a major trophy before it became the UEFA Cup? Fair enough if so, thought it was longer ago than that they won it.

The season before they'd finished tenth, so their entry was a tad arbitrary. (Presumably there was a limit to one club per city, so Everton, Tottenham and Arsenal were excluded.)

As such, I'm inclined to treat it as a paint pot.

(btw, correction of an earlier post: United did not win the double in 68. Thankfully.)

It's usually bracketed with the Wafer, so I've always assumed it was the forerunner of it and of similar standing.

But we did win it in 1970, so I'm probably biased.

Just a quick note...Oldham did win a major trophy in 1991, coming from 2-0 to beat Sheff Wednesday 3-2 on the final day to pip West Ham to the title itbt
