Have been somewhat interested in football since I was in UK and really liked the look of Chelsea after watching the FA Cup final. Definitely support Celtic now in the SPL but thinking about hitching myself to Chelsea from now on as well. Staying in West London might also have something to do with this decision.

Some big clubs conspicuous by their abscence from that list

Well np10 is the first Chelsea fan I can think of. Lack of Villa fans is a surprise. There are a few Tottenham fans but they were further down the list. No Newcastle or Leeds fans as far as I know.

Weird as well, there's quite a few of us who will be following League One but only yourself who will be following the Championship as far as I can tell

They have always had a big fanbase. But their crowds went up in the mid to late 90s once Harding started pumping money in. Then when Abramovich came in, "rent-a-crowd" started. In terms of history they would fall behind the following IMO

Liverpool
United
Arsenal
Villa
Everton

You could also put them behind the likes of Tottenham and Man City who haven't won ****loads but were always more likely to be up there than Chelsea. Plenty of other clubs might try and claim to be bigger than Chelsea pre-90s as well. Leeds, Sheffield wednesday. When i got into footy they were a midtable club with one championship. Sunderland have about 6.

Yeah not trying to argue or anything, just to educate myself a bit. So they're big in terms of fan base but not history. Interesting.

I guess so. usually been a top flight club but only recently became one of the 'big 4'. In the 80s there was a 'big six' that consisted of both Liverpool clubs, both Manchester clubs, both North London clubs (Brumby/fertang correct me if I've got the make-up of the 6 wrong there). Chelsea were never regarded as serious title challengers.

My Stepdad lived in Hemel Hempstead in the late 80s and early 90s and watched Chelsea H&A. Says that a lot of his mates from back then don't bother so much these days, disillusioned by the way things have gone. Weird, but I can kind of understand as I wouldn't like the whites suddenly being overfull every week with people who never used to give a ****, even if we were winning trophies.

Sorry it's just me being flippant - Chelsea are a big club - don't have all the traditions of the top Lancashire clubs and one or two others but they've certainly been a big club since I started to take an interest in the 70's

fertang, I'm sure I've asked you before, but how did a Lancs boy like yourself wind up a Reading fan?

I don't believe you have actually

I was born in Reading though my parents moved to a village near Kirkham when I was about 4 - in Kirkham you generally supported either PNE or Bpool as it was about halfway between the two - I was a North End sympathiser until some right **** had a real go at me for not supporting my home town team (thinking I came from Bpool) and on reflection, and reading a piece about Robin Friday, I decided he had a point

Then I got a place at Reading Uni and my fate was sealed :)

Good job you never wound up supporting either of them. Especially Blackpool. You'd be on my ignore list if you supported Blackpool.

Big five during the mid-to-late-Eighties, I certainly don't think Citeh were involved remotely. Remember them as distinctly poor. Norwich were a bigger City club if truth be told, at the time.
