Some soporific stuff so far it should be said. Spartan spattering of spectators too.

Interesting to hear Holding say Baker was nearly lost to the Windies because he's a UK passport holder. Fair play to him for turning the county gig down when he was called up tho, nice to see a bit of ambition in a young bloke that extends beyond money.

Oo, nice on-drive from Cook; shot of the day so far probly, which isn't saying a lot, admittedly. 31/0.

Yeah and he went to secondary school in Hackney. God knows where he played cricket during his teens...

The way he's bowling, maybe he didn't...

Nah, harsh. Found an inside edge that last over which missed the stmps by mere inches. Could drive a bus between Cook's bat and pads tho, it must be said.

Gayle does the trick, suddenly. Bit of a strangle down the leg side on Strauss's attempted sweep. 69/1. Should be kicking himself quite hard, was set and a score was in the offing.

Nobody forced the trophy to be up for grabs, either.

This is a series arranged to fit the contract with Sky, and should be treated as such.
It's never sat well with me that we kept the Ashes in the first post-Packer series despite losing, I think if two teams play a Test series that's for a specific trophy, the trophy should always be on the line.

Unfortunately you're liable to get pitches like this if you have Tests in early May, particularly up here.

It has been consistently dry here, but not even remotely warm. I can't even remember a day when it's been above 15C, might have had the odd one at most. It's pretty chilly even without the blustery wind.

I think the England bowlers will find more movement than WI.

If it clouds over than yes they certainly will as they are more natural swing bowlers IMHO. However I can't see them getting too much more out of the pitch.

How long till we get to see some left arm trash from Nash I wonder?

Nice to see Ravi getting some more runs. Not sure Ponting's prediction that Vaughan will be in for the Ashes will come true, not if Rav gets another ton here anyway.

I really really don't rate Baker. I can't understand what they saw in him to select him for the senior team as he has no FC record at all. He's the same height as the opening bowlers, not that accurate, he doesn't move the ball very much and he is certainly not quick.

Richardson is tall, Pascal has express pace. At least they would offer something different. Of course Ravi Rampaul should be on tour and playing but the selectors got it badly wrong as usual.

50 for Bopara. He seems to be improving with every innings, looking more and more confident and it seems that we may have found a number 3 capable of scoring some decent runs. His real test will come against Australia though, it's all well and good making runs against this lot, but it's against a genuinely good attack where he'll be truely tested. The signs look good though, I'm backing him to form a successful career in all 3 forms of the game for England.

Pascal is lighting quick, he would be atleast 5mph quicker then Edwards. I know he was expensive in the tour games but I would of given him atleast one test. I couldn't imagine Cook lasting to long against him.

Short of injury I reckon Ravi's already got enough in the bank to be nailed on for the ticklish 3 slot come The Ashes. He'll rarely have so welcoming a test attack to plunder, but he can only play the oppo put in front of him.

Bell's presence in the squad for this test seems to suggest he's next off the bench if one of the batsmen does go down too. MPV's best chance would be as an opener if Strauss or Cook went down with a niggle now I reckon.
