Davis Cup - Quarterfinals
Sunday
Antofagasta, Chile. Austrian
Heinz Hainisch has secured the European nation's place in the
Davis Cup final four after he romped past Chile's
Jefferson Quezada in four sets. In a horror weekend for the Chilean number one, he struggled against the consistent Hainisch who atoned for his five-set loss on Monday to Renato Varas. The second set, which Quezada managed to win, lasted nearly as long as the first and third where Hainisch dominated in front of a dispirited crowd. The last remaining non-European nation falling with a Quezada doube fault; Hainisch winning
6-1 5-7 6-0 6-4. With the tie decided, Chile did not have to risk
Renato Varas for the reverse singles;
Alex Rojas doing the South American country proud as he smashed
Martin Reiter 6-2 6-1 in the dead rubber.
Moscow, Russia. Russia have completed a comprehensive 4-1 victory over Sweden as both
Dmitry Orlov and
Boris Denisov won their reverse singles rubbers. Needing just one point from two matches, Orlov was keen to end it quickly for the hosts against Swede
Henrik Henrikkson. But the Russian was unable to do this; the Swedish number one ensuring the match would go deep into the fifth with some dogged play. But Orlov got the better of Henrikkson who, in his second five-set clash in three days, toiled against the well-rested Russian number one. With his first serve percentage dipping below forty, it was a matter of time until Orlov got the break and secured a
4-6 6-4 5-7 6-3 7-5 win. Replacing
Vladimir Grylzov who gave up a two-set lead on Friday, teenager Boris Denisov completed the 4-1 victory by taking a tight three-setter against
Bjorn Donaldson. In a much better performance than his straight sets loss on Friday, Donaldson worked hard but was ultimately caught short by the Russian number two; Denisov snatching a
7-5 4-6 7-5 win.
Umag, Croatia. The United States have yet to lose a point in this year's
Davis Cup campaign as they completed a 5-0 rout of Croatia in Umag.
Darcy Cowan replaced world number two
Jason Hall in the first reverse singles rubber to face
Niko Ulemek who also came in for Croatia's number one
Miroslav Brdar. The
Wimbledon champion seemed to go through the motions in a straight sets win against the world number 125; pulling through when he needed to to secure a
6-2 7-6(2) win. In the other reverse singles match,
French Open semifinalist
Dwayne Murdoch prevailed in a three-set slog against
Nilikar Midid. In a two-and-a-half hour affair, the dogged Murdoch returned everything against the impressive Midid and went on to secure a
6-3 6-7(4) 7-6(5) win.
Marbella, Spain. In the biggest upset of the tournament so far, one of the tournament's favourites Spain has been sensationally knocked out on home soil by the mighty Serbs in Marbella. Trailing 1-2, world number one
Daniel Paez Blanco ensured the hosts would still be in the contest come the fifth rubber as he accounted for a tired Serbian number one
Radivoj Daneu. Undefeated in
Davis Cup tennis, Blanco looked fresh and ready for action as he plundered a
6-2 7-5 6-4 win against an uninspired left-hander. Serbia's number two
Danijel Micic put in a fighting effort against Blanco on Friday, but his inconsistent nature left many wondering which Micic would show up for the fifth rubber against
Sergio Joaquin. But the world number 21 put ease to their concerns immediately as he raced through the first set 6-1 with the same glorious shots which could not get past Blanco on Friday. Nevertheless, the local Joaquin came back valiantly against the Serb and levelled the match at a set each before matching it with Micic in the third. But it was there that Micic got an early jump on Joaquin in the tiebreaker to put Serbia in sight of a momentous victory. Joaquin had other things to say about that, though, as he quickly jumped to a 4-2 lead thanks to a rare break of service. But this was Serbia's day and Micic roared back into complete control with a double break of service to secure Serbia's passage into the semifinals against the United States with a
6-1 3-6 7-6(2) 6-4 upset.
