Onions has probably performed better for longer though tbh, went to India with the A side and picked up a wicket in every innings he bowled, including 7/39 in 10 overs in an OD game. I'd probably play Bresnan for his extra batting and for team balance also, think the seamers will be more effective than 2 spinners. Lords certainly won't be a dustbowl you wouldn't imagine.

Erm....interesting

The thing is, the selectors have done the right thing by keeping out Vaughan/Bell/Harmison. They obviously made that decision and then thoguht...what do we do now? Though my post about picking a squad of 9 or 10 was in jest, there was a ring of truth to what I was getting at, and this is validated by the selection of players who don't even stand out at county level.

A couple of things, though. Two spinners in May would be ********, and is Sidey injured? I know he hasn't looked great of late, but he averages about 26 over the last couple of eyars, worth another crack if available, surely

Problem with Sidebottom is, his first bowl since injury is today. Not sure why he couldn't have been included dependent on his fitness and make it a 13-man squad.

I'm not sure I'd want Sidebottom back in the side tbh. He's always getting injured and has only really performed against a very weak New Zealand line-up. Take out the stats from his 2 series against the Kiwi's and his average goes up to a very poor 36. He's done ok in England against South Africa and West Indies, but I don't honestly think he's one of our best options, and I would actually rather see Harmy in the side ahead of Sidebottom.

:shy: Struggling to keep up with things at the minute...if this is his first game back, probably better to assess him. If he does well then I'm sure he'll be back in the side before long

So the 6 best bowlers currently in England are: Anderson, Onions, Bresnan, Swann, Panesar and Broad.

Yeah apparently, although Amjad Kahn was one according to the selectors a few weeks ago.

I just think the England selectors just want to humiliate Hoggard as much as they possibly can by picking every different fast bowler in the country ahead of him. He must have really done something to offend them.

Onions has at least been picked on the back of some form. Leading FC wicket taker so far, but hard to draw any conclusions from two and a bit games.

Bresnan tho? WTF? Ronnie Irani II IMHO.

Looks one of the poorest squads we've had for a long while, sad to say.

Can't say anyhting more for it than that, but at least England selectors are not quite as predictable as we thought they were. Not sure that it is really a good thing though.
Predictable selection = good selection. Because it generally means things are easy to do.

As a rule, the more inventive and clever you try to be as a selector, the more mistakes you'll make. All selectors that I've ever come accross in my time try to be too clever, too often, sometimes unneccessarily.

Bopara looks a decent prospect, but nothing more despite all the hype.
I'd give him a consistent run in the side at number 5 or 6 and allow him the opportunity to adjust to test cricket...He isn't being handled very well at the moment, picking him seemingly at random in different positions and leaving him out after his first test hundred.
TBF they didn't leave him out as such - he was merely a stand-in, so stood down. He was a sixth batsman, and in the next Test a fifth bowler was absolutely essential, so he had to go.

His time will, eventually, come, and it might just be now.

Pretty sure that Bresnan is the guy that I suggested earlier this year and Richard replied that the selectors would never go for him as his time has passed.

Don't know if the search feature will allow me to find this.
I might've said they should not and probably would not pick him, but I'd never, ever have said the time of someone who is no more than a year older than me had passed.

It was most likely to have been another of our Yorkshire seamers, Hoggard, that I said that about. And Hoggard, even right now, is a better bowler than Bresnan is likely to ever be.
